I'll do my best to make thread about it in the near future, once I get everything hashed out. I'll be sure to tag you. Or, if you'd prefer, feel free to shoot me a PM and I'd be happy to go over what I have so far.
So, with the help of the handiest dude I know, I got started making a knife today. He had a stack of old saw blades. I drew up about half a dozen designs and we settled on this one. It's a little bird and trout blade that I originally intended to be a scaled up version of a Case XX trapper blade. I cut into it too much at the top so we ground it flat across the spine. He put a flat grind on it with his belt sander and I've spent the past hour or so sanding out as much of the rough spots as I can. I'll post more pics as the project progresses, probably after next weekend.
Hey SEMO, great to hear from you man! We have some old oak planks but I was thinking about ordering something stabilized. I have a project that's been on the back burner for over a year. It's a set of scales for my 3 that are micarta w/ g10 liners. That mess is TOUGH! I made such little progress in shaping them that I got frustrated and bored. So I figure a wood of some sort that I know I'll be able to shape/finish by hand. I like ironwood, cocobolo, rosewood, and pecan. I've been shopping a lot of online knife maker shops for a book matched set. Any suggestions an old pro could impart would certainly be welcomed!
The ironwood will be the hardest to work of those you listed. It would also probably best the toughest. Anything stabilized will be tough and rugged. The cocobolo would work nicely by hand. Keep us posted with pics.
That's some serious production. Is it easy to get a Scandi grind on? Are you heat treating these yourself or shipping them out? I hope to be doing it like this in the next year or two. Awesome work, as always SEMO!
