This is a quick and dirty build of a UHMW (ultra high molecular weight) cargo toboggan, for hauling winter camping gear without much exertion. (basically to haul more beer to winter camp!) something to build while the Trekking Cart build is (SLOWLY) taking shape. Gotta keep staying creative! I could buy one locally here, there is literally 1000 companies that supply the Northern communities and SAR , skiers etc with frieght and rescue sleds made from UHMW plastic. But I can build one myself, for cheaper. Like $200 cheaper. Thats more beer money! So i started today with trip to REDWOOD PLASTICS in Port Kells BC....for their annual off cuts sale and BBQ. Scored the EXACT piece of 1/4" thick x 14" wide x 63.5" long, UV stabilized black UHMW sheet for $30. Would have been about $100 normally. 5COL Kevlar rope, 2" x 14" x 1/8" aluminum flats x 2 for the FRONT tether mount. The rest of the angle i need to get cut next week Next step is cutting 5 angle aluminum spacers, drilling holes for the haul ropes and tether cordage and mounting them with flat allen bolts. should have the aluminum custom cut this week. Cordage will be 5COL'S yellow 1 ton Kevlar braid rope. teaser pic of what It will roughly look like, mine is much much smaller....like 5' total length, and it will have aluminum angle instead of wood. . I may even build a 3/8" thick x 24" wide x 10' long one if i get really inspired. also I left my number with them.....I may see how good of a deal I can on pre cut pieces, bulk purchase, so i can make a bunch of these and sell them.
Although a toboggan makes a lot of sense up your way with all the snow and all. Hand cart part of the year and toboggan the rest?
gotta keep strong for Mom, gotta keep being Creative for me, gotta keep exploring. Dad was amazed at my adventures, and wanted me to keep on keeping on. This year i'm building the Trekking Cart and the UHMW cargo toboggan. Next year i'm building a Blown big block full size 4x4.
drilling and mounting the front plate/haul rope attachment loop. Going to replace the two end bolts with ring bolts,to attach the side lashing cordage. clamped in the vice, ready for heat bending to form the nose gently heating with heat gun. Keep it moving! natural weight of the material will bend it for you. Let it cool on its own.
cross pieces cut, drilled and grommeted mounted and 2000lb 5COL Kevlar rope threaded thru. Still need to get ring bolts for the nose piece, then i can tie off the rope.
Yah.....i have an idea for a mass produced model.........so i needed to build a quick prototype to give the plastics factory a general idea. the mass produced one is going to be a game changer......easy to tool, 30 minutes to make , 5 to 10 minutes to assemble / finish, any size required from small hunter /snowshoer 14" x 60" models all the way up to 10' wide x 30' long for heavy industry use. It will be very simple in design and even stronger than ANY currently produced UHMW or HDPE frieght toboggans or industrial sleds. This one i made is going to get used , abused , this winter.
I've made a couple of 24x60 or so HDPE toboggans out of car wash barrels -- worked pretty well once loaded, tended to want to curl when empty.
