My wife is starting a new job in a few weeks and is looking to get a new computer to work from home (we currently have none). Aside from Apple, there's no brand preference. We use Microsoft suite at work and currently use 2X client/parallels for our server/account access, but there are rumors that might change. Budget would be around $500 if there are good options. Type of work would be mostly web based but also spreadsheets, some flyers and other low media things.

    Thoughts? Links?

get a factory refurb -- they actually have better reliability than "new", because they have to be function tested before leaving the facility, and most have the same or better warranty than a new machine.
my dell inspirion 17.3" refurb was under $450.
comparable mew one is closer to $700

Take a look at the Dell Outlet. You can often get some good deals on there. I like the Latitude line of laptops if you're going for a work laptop. Newegg has some deals sometimes as well, but don't get an Acer. It's hard to go wrong with Dell, at least in my experience.
