What combinations of knives are you all using? I used to be a strict junglas and ESEE 4 guy and sometimes that is my default. Anymore i feel just as home with a CR2.5 neck set up and an ESEE4. What are you guys using?
For the field I haven’t changed my combo for a while. Esee 4 on the belt and an Izula in the pack as an emergency backup. I’ve had to use the backup a couple times because I forgot my E4 at home when I left at 4 am without coffee to wake me up. At the the money making job I keep a Leatherman Sideclip and Raptor with me. They are a little more office friendly.
I run my esee 3 as my edc blade and pairs quite well with my junglas or my bk9. Sometimes I'll switch my 3 up with my esee 4.
Truly depends on what I am doing. For hunting I have a Busse thin B4 on my belt as well as a small Buck folder. For years I have also kept my an Izula II in my pack. Much the same now except I have replaced the II with a Xancudo (S35). For field dressing game, taking skins etc this small lot has never failed me.
I keep a little swiss army knife or multi tool in the pouches of my Beckers since the sheaths have that. Makes for a useful combo.
I do that a lot hiking or mountain biking in some terrain. You can cut stuff out of the trail or make firewood quickly. And you can use pruning cuts that are more friendly to live trees where that is appropriate. The Silky saws are worth the money. I have a little folding one and a huge fixed one that attaches to fiberglass poles for actual tree work.
I have a Bahco Laplander (well a couple of them) for that kind of cutting. Here in Aus there is generally never a shortage of deadfall to feed a fire I am building without the aid of one of my Stihls When were were in NZ a few years ago the wood was really bad. We would have it stacked chest high and burn that in a night, I was feeding that with one of the Laplanders !
I should add that yes I do have a number of excessively large knives and that I am well practiced in using them to process wood and undertake tasks more appropriate to a small knife as I think there is a certain "one and one only" versatility to those larger knives (not to mention using them does make me grin). You can of course always strap a big knife to a stick and leap from a tree onto a boar and cleave it almost in half with a single blow....... do that was a Mora.....
I've been using this combo(or a variation of) for years. It's what I have with me so it gets used. I have tons of nice knives (that hilariously) I never have ON me so it's a cheap machete, rat 2 in aus, and some model of Leatherman. It works and never fails.
Thanks to @anrkst6973. He is the only one in this joint who knows how to post pictures of the discussed subject.
You’re gonna get me in trouble DJ. . My first cell phone didn’t even have a camera, the next 2 didn’t connect to the internet. Now that I can I have way too much fun blowing up the forum.
No trouble at all anrkst, your's are more than welcome (even if they generally make me hungry) ..... I will just have to bombard DJ with pics now....!!!
My DPx is always with me. I usually carry a Junglas-2 because it has become about my favorite fixed blade for large chores. Son and I took our usual hike the other day. Todd’s M-18 is just functional fun. @Dry Creek Forge Survivor-1 is perfect for most endeavors. Son always has the CR 2.5 stored somewhere and a Buck or Smith and Son’s folder.
Once in awhile. When i do its usually my Fiskars x7 or my cold steel trench hawk. My trench hawk is great at busting fatwood stumps apart and I like the handle being a little longer on that than my trench hawk. . For larger and more thicker trees I'll use my x7. Small enough to keep in my hiking pack or go bag. But is an absolute powerhouse when it comes time to chop.
Nice system! And your right with what you said. It works for you. No sense changing when it's proven.
Needs more cheerwine in that photo. I find that the more im out in the woods the less stuff i bring and that includes axes. They are heavy. I rarely use them. I seem to continue to buy them though.
