    Fire Roll....take 3

Today @Patrick Rollins, @Mudman, and I visited with James Gibson to revisit the Fire Roll that has been the bane of our existence!

James looked over our set and gave us some pointers to work out....

First we smoothed our base board and flattened it some more....it was twisted with the grain we had to flatten that out.

Next we shorted and narrowed the hand board and flattened it some too...We used the same amount of wood ash we had used before and both quickly knocked out an ember! SUCCESS!!

Here are a few pics from the Fire roll and of cool stuff lying around James' shop

Flattening Base board so it doesn't rock...very cool GB Carving Axe (right hand bit)

Eye balling flatness...good enough for government work.

Narrowing and flattening the hand piece.

Make shift level checking for gaps and high spots.
    IMG_3646.JPG

About that much.......dry wood ash and 100% cotton....cotton ball
    IMG_3648.JPG

For the record....Cotton ball and wood ash.....I promise.

More cool stuff just lying in the corner......hand carved goodness is in every nook and cranny of this shop!

Wonder how James got so good......I just wonder......

Dry wood ash....rolled by hand.....tightly....then rolled in same direction with hand and then board...until tight.....then rolled back and forth with downward pressure till an ember forms....

We've made a few attempts at this and the Fail video was pretty popular and goes thru a LOT of the process....we just didn't quite get it done till today!

watch our FAIL video above....you will knock it out quick with 2x4s!!!

reference the amount of wood ash that is in Patricks hand in the pic above.

Roll in the same direction till it is good and tight.....then hammer down..

You will get a darkening ember in the "roll"...pull it apart quickly and you should get an ember...

@shaneadams90 try these bad boys ! 3/8" THICK X 1.5" LONG tightly rolled cotton dental rolls. These things are rolled so tight they are DENSE to the touch.

Bear in mind we take a normal Jumbo cotton ball...unroll it and use ONLY 1/2 the total length of it!

You don't need as much as you think......Smaller than the diameter of a drinking straw.

    ah gotcha!

i figured the super tight pre rolled would create more friction when rolled hard.

you put the ash on one end and then roll it as tightly as you can by hand...

Then roll it by hand several times in the same direction on the board....you will feel it tighten.

then use the hand board and roll it the same way several times with increasing pressure...this will REALLY tighten the roll and with the first few initial rolls you will feel heat begin to build.

once it is rolled tightly, then you can start to roll it with hand board and then increase the pressure....it won't take long!

    Great job @shaneadams90, @Mudman & @Patrick Rollins.

At Bushcraft in Oct we got it to smoke using only cotton and extreme cheddar gold fish, never got ignition with the fish though.
