Here are some photos of the area that I stumble around in. The area is west central New Mexico. Photos are from my phone, so quality is what it is.

Leaving the cabin. Some mule deer headed to beds before the sun hits.

Heading to the bluffs to connect with some elk trails.

    Topping out above the bluffs.

View of Alegres Mountain, elevation 10,202 ft.

Before dropping into an old homestead, I noticed some elk on the hill behind me.

Taking an elk trail I call Africa rock into a old homestead.

After dropping into the canyon I started picking up some bear sign. IMG_20161018_092727235.jpg IMG_20161018_121759072.jpg
Had lunch at the old homestead cabin and checked activity around the spring.
    IMG_20170319_095057123.jpg

Springs trampled by elk. Lots of trees scrapped from last September rut.
    IMG_20170319_093853595.jpg
    IMG_20170319_094401628.jpg

After lunch started back home. Found this guy under some bluffs, probably a lion kill.
    IMG_20170319_110459436.jpg
    IMG_20170319_103815690.jpg

Headed home, about 4.5 miles to go.
    IMG_20170319_121043392.jpg

Elk will start to drop their horns in a few weeks, I will post some photos of sheds when I get them. Great day in the woods!

What is the time period on the old homestead? Any more pics of that place?

Semo, I believe it dates to around 1900/1906. It was used by an old trapper (T.J. Lyons) that I actually knew when I was a kid. I grew up about 80 miles south of this spot. I had a lot of photos of the cabin but lost them in a computer crash, next trip in I will take some more as it is about to collapse and rejoin nature.

Thank you, I have been carrying my 6 and LS for a while trying to decide which one I will be my primary blade this year. I really like my 6 for clearing some of the elk trails but am leaning towards the Laserstrike. To much weight to carry both!

I found three bulls gazing, got within 30 yards of the biggest bull but could only get a photo of his rump!

Thanks for the additional pics of the cabin. Would be an awesome place to restore to usefulness.
    Great sheds btw.

Semo, as soon as I find a good brown horn from this year's drop it's headed your way. Let me know what lengths you prefer (that I can get in a USPS box).

Another day hike today. Looking for elk sheds and found three.

Sun coming up, moon going down and a storm moving out. IMG_20170511_063804366_HDR.jpg

Some views of the Sawtooth Mt. area.

Another day hike looking for elk sheds. Heading into the Horse Mountains.

    IMG_20170514_105222689.jpg

A cave that I use when the summer monsoons hit.
    IMG_20170514_103203637.jpg

Started the long climb up to the top of mountain chain and found this elk kill. I suspect wolves on this one.
    IMG_20170514_104244385.jpg

Continuing up, I almost stepped on this little guy. He is almost the size of the elk pellets around him.
    IMG_20170514_125323986.jpg

I found a group of bulls drinking from a small seep, I managed to get pretty close but the winds shifted and they knew I was there.
    IMG_20170514_111253580.jpg
    IMG_20170514_111334803.jpg

Still climbing and hit some fresh Bear sign.
    IMG_20170514_135701147.jpg

Then I found the Bear. He is in the center of the photo, between the two young pine trees.
    IMG_20170514_145040255_HDR.jpg

The wind gave me away and he climbed out the opposing ridge.
    IMG_20170514_150031629_HDR.jpg

Finally made it to the top.
    IMG_20170514_120849986.jpg

Will post more on this hike.

    Day hike continued.

Looking to my cabin at the far mountain range.
    IMG_20170514_140451356.jpg

After about 12 miles of hiking I finally found one shed!
    IMG_20170514_153714012.jpg

As always another great day on Earth! Secured horn to pack and started my extraction.
