I have some bones from the Steer that we butchered. Some are "soup bones" that I'll likely never do anything with, and some are just the leg bones that I assume are meant for my dog. Well, they're all going to go to the dog lol. After some research, I've read that it's best to give them to him raw. But...I don't understand how this works. If I give him a raw bone, every square inch of the floor will be contaminated with raw meat. If I give it to him outside, it won't be long before it's a rotten bone sitting in Texas heat. Everything has said to not cook the bones, but we've always given our dogs the leftover t-bones and beef rib bones and he's never had an issue with them. What am I supposed to do here?!
From what I understand, cooked boned are more likely to splinter and get stuck in their throat or intestines. Give it to him outside and just take it away before it gets all nasty.
But then I'm stuck with a bone that I have to throw away. I'd like for him to be able to consume all of it. But he's not the type of dog to just destroy the thing in one setting. The bones are huge, think of a human femur, just shorter.
Just throw them away to start with and then you won't have to clean up after your dog. Pretty simple.
Cooked bones have much(!!) greater potential to cause harm to your pooch than raw. Raw also have not had the good (for your dog) cooked out of them. Give him the bone outside and let him be happy with it...the nastier it gets the happier he/she will be.
So I literally listened to none of you. I put it in a pot and let it simmer (not boil) for about an hour. Seems to still be soft enough that it won't splinter, and cooked enough that it won't gross me the **** out. He's loving it.
