Here it is. Try stick. Make one try stick and take a picture of it and the blade used. Multiple entries allowed. Multiple styles of try sticks allowed. Points will be awarded but have no value. A winner will be chosen.
Went out to look for a good stick to give a try. Found a poplar with a dead top from a recent storm and harvested this piece with my Knob Creek Forge neck knife. I thought I’d multi task the materials and peeled the bark before getting started on the try stick. I then used the spine of the knife to scrape the inner bark off. More on that later. Then it was time to hit up the notches. I went with these 7. Chamfered top, x cut pot hook, squared, rounded, half round notch, stop notch, and V notch. And finally I learned that recently scraped poplar doesn’t light very well via ferro. I had to resort to a small piece of fire starter but once it got going to had a good extended burn time. Now I’m going to let bark dry before soaking it to make something out of it.
Here's mine. Carved with a Bark River Bushcrafter blade. Spear/Tent peg point Digging/shovel tip Reduction Beam V-cut Hook 90º latch Divot Hopefully I'll find time to do another one with the PR4 for a comparison....
Mor's says that you should be able to do ten notches in ten minutes. Don't know about you guys, but i have a long way to go!
See I think the key is Mors can carve like 4 notches at once.... to me the stick I pick has a lot to to with the time success...
