The Mad trapper of Rat river. . . Claude Dallas. . .Troy Knapp the Utah Mountain Man. I'm always interested in these "Mountain Men/Survivalist's Gone Awry" stories and what skills they possessed to evade apprehension by law enforcement.. This is one from North Carolina I've never heard of before. . .
Malcom Naden was ours. Glad that the scumbag is doing life now ! He was not just a misunderstood soul that wanted to drop out of society.
Yes, no excuse for any of the criminal acts carried out by the people mentioned, but I do think we can learn from their actions and skillsets. I think law enforcement would do well to study these events as well and learn from them to be better prepared. Probably the most recent would be the Brian Laundrie evasion in the Florida swamps. Very danger cover to search, even for a tactical team, well trained and equipped.
Much of that was filmed around where I grew up and camped hunted etc. I was also intimately familiar with the hunt for him and what went into it and how he was ultimately caught. He was not “living well” out there.
Skin and bone, didn't smell even close to human. He was caught breaking into a weekender shack to steal food. This is in an area rich in game/fish and other natural food sources. I could tell you a great story about "toast" nearly getting him caught.
