Yessir. I love it. It’s from tractor supply. In the winter, I get a big ole fire goin for family and friends to gather round and warm up with a bon fire and some locally distilled bourbon
Ran out of charcloth... today was the day to make some new Always fun and a moment to practice... Processing in a new char tin No holes, microscopic openings around the lid are sufficient im my experience We have Charcloth! Now the fun part, testing it out In the Fire Piston And with Flint & Steel Yay !
It's a drizzly, lazy Sunday afternoon. I was bored so I checked out The Fire lay Video by Ruben and Patrick, Pots #23 in the Video thread. Twin sons for different mothers I'll wager. Their first was the Upside Down Fire, I love this lay and use it often. The Six Log Lay, I do it slightly different but similar, The Siberian Fire Lay, These toss of a tremendous amount of heat The heat can be adjusted by how much wood you hang over the top. Another experimental fire lay I have played with. I call it the Saturn 5 fire because of the stages. It's basically a variation of both the Upside Down and Six Log, Done properly, it will light a little at a time, They do get rocking, Fun Times, More later, going out to build a fire. LV,
Thank You for the kind words! They all don't have to be monstrous. Sometimes you just need a little heat. Four sticks tied together can go a long ways towards staving off a chill, It was around -8ºF for this one, you can see the frost coming off the knife.
I was testing out my BUSH steel from Sam Wilson the other night while out. Made a very marginal tinder bundle, and still got it to light. Nice lasting gob-like sparks. Woot!
That stove is so cool! I’ve got an antique cast iron kettle that fits into the burner plate hole on one like that.
Nice work, @Caleb O! I often step out back of the shop when I need to take a break and just practice firecraft for fun. Here's one I taped a while back, just for kicks. Sam
A nice way to start your fire... with... The Firepiston Here's a no name one... This one I like a lot The Vulcan Fire Piston by Numyth Love the light weight of this one and the storage container on the end. And here both in action
"Michigan Modified Finnish Gap Fire" This dead White Ash brought to you by Globalization, killed by the Emerald Ash Borer. Some tinder and kindling to get things going. It took off much better than expected. It was bridged over top of two other downed trees about two feet off the ground. Burning nicely with a slight breeze. These things get crazy hot! They throw off tons of radiant heat. Much more efficient that standard fires where the flames just shoot towards the sky. Optional Two Burner Stove, Beats watching television Added another round of splits before bed. This was a fast and furious episode. I cheated a bit, The ends should have green wood wedges cut so you can adjust the height if necessary. Push them together to raise, pull apart to lower. Fun and efficient way to build a fire. LV,
Fire practice this afternoon. Tools for the day, Roga scandi woodlore knife, noname firepiston and a piece of birchtree Firepiston loaded with charcloth and a bigger piece of charcloth in my featherstick Firpiston ignited after a few pumps transeferring ember to charcloth in the featerstick Blowing in it to get more heat And we have a flame That was fun
Been messing about with serrated edges for bushcraft type tasks recently. A little fire work with the BUSH steel from Wilson Custom Knives.
