We did a 2000' ascent and the snow got pretty damn deep by the time we made the top. Hard to tell where the edges were once new snow started filling in the trail. Couple of places were sketchy since you didn't know if you were going to just step off a 1000' cliff and fall to your death. Thank God for crampons! Ran into a guy up top that had no crampons, no survival gear, no water and wearing sweat pants. He decided to come back down with us. I think he had gotten himself in a little over his head. On the way down he sprained his ankle. That's how real rescues (or recoveries) happen.
This is the fifth winter for mine and I've put hundreds of km on them and they show no signs of wear, they've been getting a lot of use this winter!
You can definitely move fast in these things. We met one couple on the trail and she had no traction on her shoes and was having to take it slow. The guy that hooked up with us had nothing but tennis shoes and he was having to move real slow as well. I offered my spikes to him to see if that would speed him up a bit because I wanted to get down before we lost too much light. The snow was starting to come down pretty good and the trail was covered in some parts with snow that was avalanching off the cliffs.
Awwww Boss, you ole softie, you didn't leave the poor soul up there to freeze. Knew you had a heart in your grinchy self somewhere!
He was a good dude. Just his first time in Zion and was probably in a little over his head or at the very least unprepared for the higher elevations.
Years ago I was suppose to go wandering around Zion but got talked into (she was VERY convincing) diverting out to Craters of the Moon and then on down to Joshua Tree NP.
I hope that guy realized who he had teamed up with. Probably not that many people who are as skilled or prepared as you three to keep that guy from becoming an ice cube.
Not really. This is not our environment. We just do a little research on what we need before jumping in.
Oh, and this is your first warning for posting this in the wrong section, it belongs in the Adventure, Hiking, Backpacking and Travel
