Anyone here do this? I have my dad's old 30-06 and the barrel needs to be reblued or Cerakoted. But for a little more I can just replace the barrel and possibly change calibers.

Look at E.R.Shaw barrels. They have every thing that you need to change barrels. You will need to know a couple of things about your rifle that have to do with factory sizing. It is not to difficult as long as you pay attention and check your head space.

Thanks @evilunclegrimace. My lgs also recommended E.R.Shaw barrels.

This may turn into a special project build. I think I need a replacement stock first. This will allow for a heavier barrel profile. I'm considering the Choate Ultimate Sniper Rifle Stock. Then a decent scope.

The barrel replacement may have to wait until next year. I'm also considering a caliber conversion to something that has the same sized bolt face like the 6.5x55 Swede.

So the choate is a beast of a stock. Don’t let the open stock fool you it is a very heavy stock. Which in many applications is a huge advantage just keep that in mind.

There are a lot of savage profit barrels out there as a lot of custom action makers are using the savage barrel set up or a remage (savage Remington hybrid) to allow easy barrel swaps. ER Shaw is god shillin is good. Match grade machine, Mcgowen, criterion, pac nor or very high end go Proof research and many more.

With the Long action body you have plenty of caliber options although most of the new “cool” stuff is based on short action. Is this going to be a hybrid do everything rifle. Or strictly target plinking fun?
30-06 is “old school” and no one gives it much thought these days but it is still an amazing round and with the new projectiles that are available I can get a 30-06 to hang with a lot of 300 win mag rifles especially those from 10 years ago.

In a long action my two favorite cartridges are the 6.5x55 Swede (my current long range rifle). And the 6.5x284. The ballistics in the 6.5 projectiles are amazing and easily 1K capable. The Swede is a very soft shooting round. The 6.5x284 is an amazing target round but barrel life is poor plan on a rebarrel in under 3k round closer to 2K

Stepping up to 7mm I would go .280AI. Ackleybis more relevant then ever and the 280AI is solid.

Any thing larger I would just go magnum
