The first 5 tries I was using small aluminum camp pans but they seemed to cool down too quickly. I was only able to fry an egg half way and I did get water to start boiling but then it would stop within a couple seconds. So I thought maybe the aluminum cooled down too easily. On the last attempt I used a cast iron chicken fryer, because cast iron holds heat longer even though it takes longer to heat up. But that didn’t work either. I was able to get water to start boiling and then it would stop soon after. I will figure this out! Thanks for the tip though
I think that was my fault. Apparently the album was set to "private"...I think I fixed it now, thank you!
@Bushcraft_Dave set me up with all of these goodies except the Rusty Blades kydex. Nice additions to the collection. That Darien is my new favorite way to trim up the fence lines!
There it is! I like those stove design’s, always wanted one made from oil field scrap. I’m afraid I don’t know why yours isn’t working though. The pan supports should be be dang near glowing and you should almost be able to fry an egg with residual pan heat if using cast iron. Baffling…
The only thing I've noticed that this stove has that others don't seem to have is vents on the backside. I did block that vent off with a piece of sheet metal during one try and it didn't seem to change the result. This stove had good reviews but now I'm wondering if any of the reviewers actually used it before giving it 4-5 stars lol I'll keep doing more research. I bought this for camp and as an added back up for long term power outages so I wouldn't have to burn through all of my propane Rear vent by BlueMule posted Aug 10, 2022 at 10:31 AM
Actually with it in that configuration it holds the pan closer to the opening, but I did try it both ways as well. Sorry everyone, not trying to hijack this thread! lol
You could always ask one of our mods to move it over to the stoves thread and keep it rolling. I'm sure everyone else wants to see your progress and outcome also !!
This is a thinking process..Looking at the flames inside of the stove there’s no draw, no air suction. The fire is just..burning. ( But I still don’t know why) it should be sending those flames up the chimney with a near roaring sound. If it’s not, then what’s happening is the effect of trying to cook while holding your pan 10 inches above the burner on your kitchen stove.
I honestly think the rear vents are a design flaw. If there was no where for the heat to go but up I think this would work, but given there's a path of low resistance behind the stove I expect a lot of the heat is escaping that way. Probably welding a plate there would direct the flames and heat upward out of the chimney. I'm not seeing any other examples of rocket stoves with these vents and I imagine that's why.
Try stacking dry sticks vertically in the chimney, as well as horizontally at the base. might draw faster / hotter if the chimney was burning
Tried that too haha The only way I got the "rocket" effect was by dropping fire starters down into the belly and that made it burn very hot but only for a short time of course.
