Hi folks, this is more of a tip to those wanting in on the "elusive art" of the feather stick than anything else. It can be practiced with a shard of wood and a pocket knife, which I'm sure most here would have no trouble finding both. It won't help with learning how to posture your shoulders or leaning into your stick. But it did help me out a lot with learning how to angle my knife to go after a desired curl. Watch your digits if you practice this.

It's not a stick per se, it used to be. Now it's a box full of shavings.

That's unbelievable. It really seems that folks in Scandinavia have such a deeper connection with wood working and nature makes me kinda jealous that they get pretty much get that as a birth right... kinda like we get the second amendment.... (now that I reminded myself of that I'm not jealous at all. USA! USA!)

I completely agree. I find doing this on a regular basis brings a closer bond with the knife you choose to use. it makes you learn the angle, pressure, and control needed to make the smallest paper thin curls. These ones will catch a spark first try

Tinder-Feathers/curls, kindling, fuel...(I know the fuel is more like kindling but hey it's a representation.

I have buddies that try and try to get bonfires started with lighter fluid and matches after a few days of rain. I love doing about 5 minutes of solid prep to embarrass them. Lol

This is how I manage to practice every few days or so. I'll cut out a few 1x4x.5 boards from a hard wood. Grab a razor sharp knife and find a good corner. This allows me to practice the skill indoors as my job doesn't allow me the Tim to
Hit the woods much these days. Sometimes I'll leave the curls on. Sometimes I'll slice them off and pile them up. Both methods have merits. But this allows me to stay in tune with each of my go to knives and really hone the skill.
Plus when I'm done they go into a bag that is gonna tag along next time I'm in the woods.
