My I tired of hearing about the battle at Bristol camp. This is Roan High Knob Shelter on the Appalachian Trail. It's the highest elevation shelter on the trail. Campsite elevation 6280 feet Granite Gear pack Looking up where I camped the next morning It poured the rain pretty much all night. Temps were upper to mid 50's with winds about 20-25 mph. Short hike maybe 2 miles or so steady climb of about 1000 feet elevation gain.
Awesome area. Here in my backyard we have the other end of the spectrum....the lowest elevation on the entire AT on Bear Mountain at 124 ft
Great pics, thanks for sharing them!!!!!! Always wanted to hike the whole AT, did some Southern portions when I was younger, too old & worn out now though. If anyone wants to hike the whole thing, my advice do it while you are young, pre-50 anyway.
This is an amazing area. That section doesn't have the long range views but it also doesn't have the crowds. Its a very unique environment much like a rain forest and has many rare plants that are only found in that area as well. It's also always much cooler at that elevation which was a nice break from the heat. Bad part is firewood is basically non-existent.
That's a sleeping mat. It all looks disheveled because it poured the rain all night. Things didn't pack up as neat as they did at home when it was dry
Yea I don't mind hiking in in the rain if things are going to dry up but packing up in the rain to leave sucks. Nice looking trip though and thanks for sharing.
