Condemned to the bottom of a used margarine bowl amidst the rubble of broken Chinese and Pakistani folders,I spied this little beauty.

Awaiting a life of usefulness again, she found her way into my pocket via a trade for a Lincoln portrait valued at $5.

She had given part of her soul to the cause, and would be required to give even more to regain a place of use among tufts of pocket lint.

A dallop of elbow grease, a half of a tube of spit and polish, and a drop of oil breathed new life into this beauty.

The next time your knife snaps and loses a part of its soul, don’t toss it in a butter bowl. Find a place where it can be restored to new life.

    Cool!

So you just removed two blades and the springy parts?

Yes. I removed the broken blade, which necessitated removing the opposite blade as it was on a rocker spring.

How did you get the rivets out without damaging the handle?

Looking at the pics I would say he opened the knife up and sawed the rivets in half from the inside and pushed them out from the inside. Looked like they are cut in half in the disassembled pics.

I'm guessing he carefully drilled one side out, and pushed them through. Put new pins in after refinishing, then peened them over.

    Thanks Jeff.

The pins that hold a folder together are mostly brass and nickel silver.
They are easily cut with a utility knife blade. I set the blade on a vise, then drive the knife down and across the blade. It cuts the pins. Sometimes the pins are salvageable if you are removing blades. Most of the time the pin bends and is unusable.

After disassembly I had to drill through the bolsters, and repin the backspring and blade. The stock that Schrade used on these knives is not readily available. Oversized pin stock is turned down to proper diameter, knife assembled with a fixture to remove backspring tension, all peened together, finish sanded, and buffed.

    Thanks all
