Bow Drill in the Desert can be a challenge, here is how I handled it today. I will let the Pictures do most of the talking. I will point out a couple of different ways I handle some things. Proof of Life Photo. My go to wood in the scrub, Old Fenceposts. I used the lid from my ESEE Tin for a Coal catcher when the ground is wet, I just dig a little trench for it to rest in. I put some brush on the ends of the Fireboard to keep it dry. I had to hustle when I got some smoke, the Wind was really ripping. I used Sagebrush Bark for the Tinder Bundle, it's one of my top five of materials for Tinder. Not as much fun as beating my Knife with a Rock, but still an O.K. way to spend some time.
I will add one other tip, before I added a Divot to my Izula I would use the corner of my Survival Tin for a Hand Socket. There are zero Rocks out here that would work, and no Hardwoods to make a Socket.
I brought my Kit home from yesterdays hike for some testing, burned in a new hole and got ready. I have only used the Solka Tin in the past, I wanted to try the ESEE Tin today. I had on a thin glove as I was thinking the thinner ESEE Tin might get hot, it is thinner than the Solkoa. I checked the Tin when I was done, it was a little warm but not bad. I will do some further testing later to see if it heat is a problem. The Tin worked great, slick as Snot, zero friction when Bowing. For me the big eye opener was using the lid as a coal catcher, it is so easy this way and keeps all moisture at bay.
