Unfortunately, I would expect cases like this to increase. Climbing, in all forms, is as popular as it's ever been and more accessible than anytime in the past. Friends who still climb a lot tell me that they are seeing some truly scary stuff almost everytime they go out. People are going from a few trips to a climbing gym or bouldering area straight into attempts to climb difficult routes. Even worse, with Alex Honnold's popularity and the documentary that was recently released many are trying free climbing with absolutely no basic climbing skills.
