There are some really experts on sharpening on this forum (I'm not one of them!) so let's share our knowledge and have sharper knives as a result. Oh and photos of edges are cool as well as long as it's starts a "my knife is shaper than yours" bragging match. Here are two knifes. One I reprofiled and the other I didn't.
Yes! Good thread @nathan shepherd ,i suck at sharpening and could use advices from you, bravo and c.kent.
Great video, Bravo! I suck at sharpening, but I have a set of DMT diafolds that work decent on my smaller blades, even for me. I've never owned a strop - maybe I need to contact @Flex to get one and start practicing.
Re-profiled vs factory Zero Convex Toothy vs Polished Plain toothy My monster strop. On the other side is the green compound. I forgot to throw Flexxx's paddle strop in there with the white and bare leather.
The strop will make a massive difference. There is probably nothing wrong with what you are doing with the stones but the edge will need refining after using them. Black compound on a good leather strop will get that edge scary sharp in a couple of minutes.
Bravo I thought I did a hell of a sharpening job until I started seeing your pics on the old forum! I've always used DMT stones and the back of a leather belt to strop. You convinced me I need to get a real strop and some compound! I did pickup a lansky double ceramic stick set in the wooden box that looks like a one-hitter dugout. It works great for touch ups, but will round off your blade point if your not careful.
Yes sir I am! Stropping is the last phase in my sharpening process. A bare horsehide strop to be exact!
It looks like you've got long forward moving strokes on there, what were you using? Maybe that's just oil?
