Got the 4 younger kids out for a nice day hike. About 3 miles through the woods.

    Even Patchy came along.

Southern ringneck snake, I believe. We found him nestled under some leaves in the middle of the trail. We moved him so he wouldn't get stepped on.

    A couple salamanders.

For a chilly day, we saw a surprising amount of wildlife. Up close of a caterpillar.

SCORE!!! Hen of the woods mushroom. 1 of a couple we found.

    Middle boy holding our find.

We pulled in 8 lbs from a couple different locations. Thanks for reading.

My oldest is 17, and the youngest is 2. They grow too quickly.

Hen of the woods is really fleshy once you pull back to outer "leaves" and grows around oaks in undisturbed areas in fall. I'm not too good at describing taste, so I'll say it's pleasant but not strong. Kind of tastes like a portabello.
