Going to Haiti in a few months. How/can I take a knife. I would at least like to take an izula. I cannot find any good information on if I can or not. Obviously I would have it in checked baggage, but can I legally have it in Haiti? If anyone knows, thanks in advance.
If the laws are unknown you could take a “tool” like a multitool, or a “tool” like a Swiss army folding tool kit. They both have blades, but can be presented as traveller’s tools.

Having traveled through my fair share of shi...errr....questionable countries, you are best to do to avoid giving a petty dictator (ie the first customs/police/military guy you meet at the airport) the opportunity to extort either $s or time out of you. Whilst the concept of "universal happiness" (that is generally $US cash) will solve many issues in such situations, the nuances of this can be difficult and best avoided if at all possible or if you are not familiar with that particular locale (at best you pay too much at worst you get yourself into great deep do do that sees you inspecting a pillow in the holding block). Go to a market place or other shop and buy yourself something locally.
They're a few years behind so I expect it's much like when you were a kid with that single playboy hidden in the woods that everyone knew about.
Many nations have a border prohibition on "pornography", Australia included, the devil is actually in the fine print. Only a week or so ago a Malaysian was detained and subsequently refused entry to Australia based upon the material he had on his laptop. In most cases the "porn" prohibition is not referring to a tatty copy of Playboy or Penthouse you may have in your luggage (purely for the articles of course ) but relates to offensive or abuse material, there is, here anyway, a scale used to assess these things. You also have to remember that when you fly you can also be subject to the laws of countries you are simply transiting through, in some places that copy of Playboy may earn you a visit to the cell block where Bubba (or Abdul the Cruel - depending on where you are) will take the time to act out something he read in "Forms" ... "I always thought these letter were lies but there I was alone...in my tent on the edge of the desert when he was pushed into the tent with me and looked longingly in my direction...". What is considered normal, acceptable and your rights at home may well be a very different thing in many other countries.
In New Zealand they will welcome you with open arms....the rest of the world send you down into holding.
