in order to feed this lot, you need a…somewhat generous portion of meat.

paging @Bushcraft_Dave my friend I would never have considered a knife without a point to be good for meat trimming, but after watching a bunch of Asian chefs and soaking in their technique for using this. It was just unbelievably easy. I’d even say fun, as in, it makes you giggle at how effortless it is.

eat some garlic. It’s healthy, prevents illness, the onset of hereditary diseases, also protects from awkward social interactions, and having conversations with…vampires .

outside. Station 1. Need a savory liquid to cook 2 whole cups of brown and wild rice. The backpack and foragers standby.

How do you pre-heat to sear temp a pot this big? Think “inside the box”. Yeah…

I kinda have the best type of kitchen. Fresh, breezy, and filled with friends.

    Almost…

    20814B68-5154-441D-901C-42D16FC1DB5F.jpeg
had to do 2 stages of sear. It’s out of control even if I use a bloody caldron. :) At the last bit in goes a full bulb of roughly chopped garlic, and my cracked fennel and caraway . A minute or two just browning and releasing the wonderful smoky flavor.

    6FCF837E-E080-4B72-A47F-0B323A68B5EC.jpeg
Now I’ll deglaze with boiling stock, and bring it all together. It just sits hot while I prep up the next stage..

need to send this up into the 350f-375f range for about an hour.
(I swear I got the sorriest grade or bag of charcoal in all the history of charcoal. No btu’s! I had to add a second load and go almost 30 extra minutes to get where I needed. Never buying store brand again! :( )

Determination is what it takes sometimes. The smoky aroma draws them out like moths to the flame. ;)

At this point you can just feel the napping coming on. Its pretty much a guaranteed thing. Go with it.

That’s definitely a known and quality brand, 1” longer in blade than mine. Absolutely get it and try it out! I’d love to hear what you can do with it. :)

All the luck in the world wouldn't help you two succeed at either of those tasks if shrooms are involved..if all else fails I can run pretty fast for a larger man

    “Dream a little dream”

This bit is years, a couple of decades really, in the doing. I decided to get something I’d wanted forever but my search powers were proving to be less than stunning.
Then a good friend stepped in to the scene, did some serious internet voodoo, and today this…landed at my house.

A real honest to goodness RMJ Shrike. :D
In the newer 80CRV2 steel, Black rubber electrical insulating handle.
Wow…just wow. This thing is so cool!

    BD58B595-5CD3-48E8-B561-9EE2990C42A0.jpeg

I thought I’d better put an image in cyberspace because I absolutely 100%ly guarantee you it will never be this clean, unscratched, or not covered in something icky ever again. ;)

    Told you so…

    A852F829-5ECE-4F7D-BEBD-C2FD8444654F.jpeg

It’s been in my possession for…10 minutes. Destruction time!!
It’s not a big thing by any means but I chopped, ripped, and wrenched huge chunks out of this old dry stump.

    EB597FBD-F78F-4044-B4DA-42F0DF40DFAD.jpeg

Food foraging. I’ve played with a lot of spiked poll designs and this one is extremely well done. Multiple strikes around the base of the plant with a light twisting motion will let you extract both the green and the tuber root with minimal disturbance of the surroundings.

Sanitation or excavation digging, in hard clay and rocky soil. (Are we ever “nice” to things? :D )
Use your hat as a template, or circle your fingers around your head at eyebrow level and transfer that measurement to the ground. Make it about as deep as from your middle fingertip to your wrist deep. Properly dug sanitation hole. Nobody wants to find a naked pile in the woods.

Hard dry seasoned wood. It bites good but it’s shy on mass for this size stuff. You probably wouldn’t be going at anything this big to feed a twig stove for sure. Fingerling to wrist sized would be no problem though, the edge holding and bevels are spot on.

    Ready for duty…

    CFF41E0E-77CC-4AE8-89E8-6CBCE5227310.jpeg

I just dry brushed it with a nylon brush and examined the edges. No real damage. Not even truly dull. Maybe a tiny tiny dunting of the needle sharpness on the spike. I proceeded to give it a few passes on a X Fine DMT rod then a few on the cutting edge and beard with white ceramic. Hmmm…I don’t have much hair left on my arms…I’m going to be mistaken for a male model or a Chippendales employee pretty soon.

The booklet that comes with it says to work with the sheath, get used to it. I just messed around with different mountings to see what would make an easy on/easy off arrangement.
This is going to be a regularly used demo & digger. Can’t wait to get in the scrub and muck with it.

Got my Imacasa on the other side, now I think I’ve got a handle on dealing with both the dense briar and brush choked wall in front of me, and the reinforced concrete like soil under my feet. Bring it on.

She asked for Chili and Cornbread.
I went south of the border to find it. ;)

Regular ole canned American chili is boring as heck.
Give me something with some Hooya!
