2025 See What Travels Unfold

Another trip around the sun and still on the right side of the dirt.

UP of MI and NW MI July through September.
WI for 10 days then west for three weeks. See what unfolds. We lived in SW ID for four years so we traveled the State extensively in the mid 70s. Been to Glacier NP 3 times.
Time to travel west.

 

Any suggestions for cool places to see in the UP? I've been to Picture Rocks and Marquette, etc. We're going to hit those spots and up to Copper Harbor later this year. Plan is hiking, taking our bikes and renting some kayaks.

 

Lake of the Clouds in the Porkies. There's lots of offroad biking in Copper Harbor are, I recall a bike wash. There's also a Lake in town that would be good yakking. There's a great overlook for sunsets just outside of town.
Fall Color Copper Harbor | Keweenaw Upper Peninsula doesn't have to be fall.
Lake Fannie Hoe (Seriously).
You can drive all around the Peninsula. We went to Eagle River, great beach there, didn't find the Agate Beach nearby.
Definitely take your kayaks to Lac La Belle. Very cool cabins and store. Old timey woodsy feel.
Think there is a Lodge at Bete Grise worth checking out and walking around. There are a few great restaurants in Copper Harbor.

Spend time between Munising and Grand Marais. There are a dozen waterfalls. Go to the old Log Slide if you haven't been.

Take the Boat Thrill Ride (Riptide) out of Munising around the island. Great fun for adults and kids. We saw a falcon doing ariel battle with an Eagle.
We hired a guy to take us out to pictured rocks at sunset, great photography opportunity.
Go Kayaking there if you haven't been. They do tours with guides and boat transport.
Great area to visit.

Are you camping?

 

Thank you for the suggestions. We will likely not do any camping so that we can maximize time spent exploring. The last trip we stayed in Marquette and roamed from there. It will likely be the same, plus some nights in Copper Harbor, this time.

The family is going to take a shorter trip over to the central part of lower Michigan to visit family later this year. We might stop at Indiana Dunes on the way back since we have never been there before... I also might sneak another trip in up to the Munising area as well

@C99c - how long do you plan on staying in Munising? I can pm you some of my suggestions for that area...

Undecided at this point. Probably two days at most. I appreciate any suggestions.

 

@C99c - Sent you a lengthy pm... You have probably seen most of it on your last trip, just through I would call our our stops we make when we are up there in case you missed any! Enjoy the trip and make sure to take pictures to share with us!

We ended up back in MN on the North Shore of Lake Superior.
3 nights at Split Rock Lighthouse State Park Shipwreck Creek Campground.
A few hikes/walks. Took Hwy 1 halfway to Ely. Finland and Isabella. Found some dirt roads in the Superior National Forests and couple of nice Lakes.
Today we moved to Grand Marais. Here are pics.

Agree. That's a really great shot.

 

Two years ago at sunset the lighting on Split Rock Light was perfect.
Drama, changing, color, textures and full spectrum.
Went back last week to nearly but not the same spot and this location was better, higher. The Lighthouse was socked in, then opened up for about 10 seconds. The shot Sequence goes from the best shots to where's the Light? It's gone. Unadulterated. Sometime I'll crop a little.

The tent campsite came with its own viewing station!

One or two of these I "played" with color wise. Most again are unadulterated.

Gunflint Trail out of Grand Marais to Trails End Campground.
Walleye Chowder at the Gunflint Lodge. It is iconic. Look across Gunflint Lake into Canada.
