Their Velvicut Hudson Bay is phenomenal to me. I'm an axe amateur compared to most though.

I found this hatchet that had a junk plastic handle a couple of years ago. I removed the handle and paint and plastic. The eye tapered very narrow in the middle. I didnt get the head to the shoulder as i would have liked. It is hung to the first third like you would a large axe. Or you could say it was hung too open for a hatchet. Makes a good little hatchet non the less.( If you touch the handle and bit edge to the ground a hatchet or a small axe like a boys or pulp, the middle of the bit/blade edge will be touching the floor. This called being properly hung. A large felling axe bit should have the center of the first third touching the floor. That is properly hung.)

Still has the rough field edge from the last time I took it out. It is very hard compaired to my other axes.

I tend to collect things. These are the standard axes that Gransfors makes. The third and fourth were purchase recently as I had given the originals away that had been purchased 15 years ago. IMG_2107.JPG

I haven't been able to do much testing with it since I'm giving this one away to a friend, but that's not to say I haven't been fondling it regularly since it showed up. Everything about it is of the highest quality from materials to fabrication, so I don't mind the additional coin for something I only have to buy once. the fact that it is all USA made and I call Liam a friend tilts the scales a bit as well. I'll do some comparisons with the GB and give ya'll a little more meaningful feedback. Liam loves social media, so anyone keeping up with him has an opportunity to grab one of his axes or get in on a small batch run like with this 12". The dealers are also an option.

Handle patterning. Digitally drawn using a photograph with the center of gravity marked on it so that the handle could be brought inline with it, then printed to scale on tiled pages and cut out. Once my hickory blanks get here I'll be using a little white glue to tack the printout to the board before cutting out the profile.

You will experience severe runout at these angles from board stock. This handle should be made from split not cut quarters and steam bent.
Edit, you may be able to "cheat out" some wavy grain but I bet it will be seriously comprised and crack along the belly.

They're only $62.97 and the quality is a nice half-way between Council's base level models and something like a Velvicut. Thinner bit geometry than a Council HB.

    Steel: 1080 High Carbon

Awesome thanks @FortyTwoBlades. That reminds me I have to refinish my Velvicut. It's been sitting getting ugly for a long time.

You can see it's got a real thin chopping geometry, but they were able to blend the cheeks into the bit/eye transition without making it so severe that would preclude splitting tasks.
