@Caleb O , thank you for the suggestions! I have some materials drying and will be trying again with these in mind!
Hope you can get them to work. Always a bit of guesswork when you’re not there in person, but that’s what I’d try next. Happy spinning!
Well, Well, Well look what I found buried deep in this piece of wood ha ha ha. Finally had some success, using a piece of ocean spray for spindle and aspen base. The spindle is a bit thin, I intended to try hand drill but it kept glazing at the tip. I trimmed it down and used the bow and it worked pretty easy.
Hand drill ember. Not blown to flame this time (had a bunch of stuff to do ). But still spun, even though it had been a bit.
It had been about a week since I’d spun an ember, so as a challenge I used a shorter spindle than I’d usually prefer. Not my best work, but an ember was still made.
Spun this the other day....friction fire is a lot easier when it’s 108° outside... View attachment 79463
Friction fire last night. New set. Sotol on sotol. Palo verde tree needles/leaf bundle with willow bark center.
Bow drill from scratch the other day. Willow hearth, sotol stalk spindle, fat wood bearing block. Bundle was palo verde leaves with a willow bark center.
Hand drill ember spun at Rabbitstick Gathering in Idaho. Helped my friend Conrad archive his first hand drill ember and then fire as well. Always amazing!
