Decided to turn two pieces of poplar that I havested to make tent poles into a feather stick and a half of a try stick. Only missing a few notch examples but I’m very pleased with the performance of my ole’ faithful Mora Garberg Carbon. Starting to show its age and use. It’s my absolute favorite…

…this may be my best feather stick ever. It’s destined for the pit tonight.

All about technique. You should only be cutting off tiny tiny corners. Lay the cutting edge perpendicular to the corner…With a light touch, increase the angle of the blade til it bites but doesn’t dig. Try keeping the blade still and pull the stick towards you (this helps me control the cut better). Lastly, choose poplar or cedar to start practicing. Some craft stores sell soft wood dowels. Grab one that’s 1” in diameter and about 3 feet long. split it in four sections. That’ll give you give you 12 really good corners to practice on.

I will give you the secret.... everyone talks about the "skill"....but the REAL skill is in the careful selection of the right wood. Cedar and Popular and other soft "hard woods) make the best feathers. Wood with long straight grain GREATLY increases your success...

also, different knives yield different results...

the ultimate secret...... practice... lots and lots of practice.
