Hey everyone, I am getting ready to do another small batch of my survival puukkos and wanted some input. Here is a pic of one of the last units from several years ago. (Horrible pic quality, but you get the idea.) These are based on a Polar factory made blade blank with the 3.5" or 3.75" long blade. I make the handles and buttcaps in my shop myself, and perform all of the required wizardry to attach them securely to the handles. To keep the cost low on these, I will do kydex sheaths instead of leather on this batch. That will bring them to $195 each. I would like to know who all would be interested in one. If there's enough interest, I'll get these going by the end of the month. Just sing out if you want one, or feel free to offer any feedback/critiques. Thank you! Sam
Very cool looking blade....what steel are you using? I'd love to be a fly on the wall during some of that wizard work!
Thank you! These are Polar brand blade blanks that I use, I believe they are 1095. I use those to make these an affordable "mid-tech." On my custom versions with micarta handle, like below, I make my own blades and use 1095. Thanks again! Sam
Very nice concept Sam. Will the version you are about to make have just a hollow tube handle? Or will it be a fire steel like your micarta version?
Thank you! I do the compass in the buttcap, as that is by far the most requested. I offer the ferro rod in the buttcap for a $20 upgrade, to cover the cost of the rod and the bit of extra machining involved. Sam
Edit***DID I REALLY MISS THE LARGE YELLOW TEXT LOL or did you edit that in after? Sorry I got baked in the sun today 2 canadian beer will give ya a pretty good buzz at 5% I have a feeling 2 blades will probably end up making the journey
Lol, I added the yellow after you asked. Better be 5% or above to drown out the mother-in-law! Let me know if you have any questions. Sam
Thought I would post up some of the progress pics. I do these in the background while working on orders. Got the first three assembled and shaped, except for the ferrules. Starting on kydex.
And kydex is done. These are baking right now, the handles and buttcaps (not the brass ferrules or blades) are GunKoted OD to match the kydex. Sam
In this batch, two got the handles/buttcaps GunKoted and one stayed satin aluminum. Either way, these are going to work well in the woods. Will cord wrap tomorrow. Sam
Thanks, Bushman! Here a couple of other configurations. The orange is very difficult to photograph, but is a true Safety Orange in person. Sam
