Once across the fallen log bridge, we entered the forest and followed the (thankfully snow free) trail to the old truck, mine, waterfall and old cabin. Along the way we spooked two male "hikers" - city folks (equipped with nothing, not even water, jackets , or gear , nothing. They probably heard about the old Mine online and went to check it out. Pretty f****** stupid to be in these mountains with zero gear - it's people like those two that make my buddies in SAR lose a day or two of pay looking for / rescuing their azzes.

. They looked real nervous as @Twoody88 and I silently emerged from the forest greenery right in front of them). Both @Twoody88 and I pad silently as we hike, plus we were both in full camo clothing/gear. Both of us had knives strapped to our webbing shoulder straps. I said hi to them and walked past them. They stopped to talk to @Twoody88 and asked if their bicycles they had stashed were still there. While @Twoody88 was talking to them I was right behind them. They freaked a little when they realized that. I was just on OverWatch for @Twoody88 in case these two people tried anything.

@Twoody88 draining out the coffees from the long drive up :D Quit playing with it!

We left the single adit and made our way to the old cabin. Sadly, it was in even rougher shape than several weeks ago . The heavy snow took its toll this year, as well a bear got into the cabin, tore off the fridge / freezer door and scattered the food stashed there for several years. Bear also dragged out multiple items outside , and the inside of the cabin is quite disturbed , more so than three weeks ago.

pics editing / loading - will get the rest up Sunday

After a quick tour of the snow damaged/animal damaged abandoned old cabin, it was time for lunch.

we set up our kit on the patio of the cabin and I got my SAS MKettle boiler going. Lunch was two pouches of 4 cheese mashed potatoes, spicy vegetable tikka masala, spicy madras lentils, all mixed together, about 2 lbs of food - A nice 4000 calorie high carb/protein/nutrient lunch. Followed by S'mores hot chocolate.

but the absolute highlight of the day was when @Twoody88 suddenly ducked as a little bird buzzed his head and flew off. Or so we thought.... there was multiple families of little tiny brown bats roosting right above us on the patio roof! So cool to see these little mosquito killers up close.

Packed up the webbing rigs, headed across another washed out creek to the older 30's era cabin.

Even the small creeks blew out their banks and were flooded with debris torrent flow.

Carrying onwards into the forest, @Twoody88 spied a dilapidated wood structure north of the Mine, up a steep ridge. Naturally we clambered up the steep mossy, slick rock ridge to see what it was. Looked to be a shelter, eating area for the Mine workers. The canvas tarp roof was long rotted away, and there was remnants of a liquid fuel stove rusting in the deep moss. Heavy canvas hose hinges held a long gone door to the shelter.

we scrambled back down to the trail below , and carried onwards thru the forest.

The weather was getting sunny. All i was wearing was boots, socks, pants, a thin under armour shirt and my smock. I was never cold despite the rains or sweating. I was also never hot under heavy exertion, I could just pump out the moisture and heat.

Stopped by a side channel of the main creek to refill the canteens. I can only imagine the sheer amount of trout (Brook, Cuttie, etc) that use these side channels to spawn .

Up an overgrown long decommissioned 60's/70's era logging road for awhile.

Found an old placer claim tag in a tree , dated 1963. (For the SilverDaisy Mine). Back then the Ministry Of Mines & Natural Resources was called British Columbia Forest Service Resources Inventory Branch. Today it's called The Mineral Titles Office. (Forestry and Mining are separate offices)

    98D46502-0F1A-4F7E-8729-7591EF73BBE4.jpeg

Nowadays all mineral/placer claims are tagged via GPS waypoint data and stored in government servers. Back then, and well into the early 1990's, you had to survey the mountains yourself , tag your claim with the aluminum markers every couple hundred feet, and scratch waypoint numbers onto the soft aluminum tags with a nail.

We continued up the very old overgrown old era logging road, and eventually found a treasure trove of old logging camp/kitchen/quarters castaways.....AKA garbage.

deep in the forest , slowly rusting away, was a massive pile of old food tin cans, broken plates, bottles, cooking gear, old leather hobnail logging boots, cookstove, and an wooden outhouse. Some old spring bed frames lay buried in the forest floor, the structure around them long rotted away.

We left the old logging camp and headed back to the main river crossing. Got back to the truck and headed to our secondary objective - Bill Robinsons old cabins at Camp Defiance.

    https://www.michaelkluckner.com/bciw2hopeprinceton.html

photos from decades ago - first pic is how the cabins looked all my life , every time the folks drove back from Vancouver to the east in the 70's/80's , Dad always pointed out the cabins.

    F7F7B0F3-4CA4-4D76-8E6D-C356EB67065E.jpeg 346774B1-3A6E-4B26-9EBF-D73F42993456.jpeg 7C7055FE-A82A-4E04-B698-A757A94F6F01.jpeg B2838B02-EE39-480E-B53A-170F907F91F6.jpeg

our goal was simple. Cross the river by wading the stream , and fully document the current state of Bill Robinsons cabins. Time and weather have not been kind - a massive snow and landslide wiped out two of his cabins, but there is a third still standing.

we could see it. Less than 100' from across the stream. Right there. A piece of British Columbia history.

    BUT.......:(

The stream was currently 5' to 6' deep and flowing fast. Too deep and too fast to safely wade it . No matter how far up and down the stream we wandered - the depth and water flow rate was deadly.

we were seriously bummed out - we had come so far , but Mother Nature is an evil b*tch.

we decided to come back very soon and use a pack raft, a grappling hook and rope (for hand over hand guidance across the swollen stream in the pack raft).

    ITS GOING TO BE EPIC!!!!

In the meantime here is a few photos of our nemesis - the stream between us and Camp Defiance, plus the current state of the cabins viewed from the highway

Bloody awesomeness guys! I love pilfering! All that old stuff is fascinating! I did find a 1908 silver dime in the area where once stood a house back in the early 20th century. That stamped steel cook pan would be nice to examine more too. ;)

@Twoody88 and I drove back to the city , I dropped him off at home, then I headed home myself.

about 620 KM's total trip driving distance .

an absolutely epic day. The highlight was the little tiny brown bats - I literally rubbed one on the forehead with my finger. It nuzzled my finger and then tucked it's head back into its wings.

We were so blessed on this excursion..... Raven flew overhead and followed us , croaking and talking. The expected first river crossing that was supposed to be full on spring thaw runoff, was low , dry . Raven had blessed us well today!

excellent day with excellent people. Nuff said!
