USPS brought me some new Izula accessories. Going to try out pocket carry for a while. Pretty funny that the knife place I buy the accessories from sends a bandaid in the box with their logo on the wrapper.
I ordered some anodized washers for my sheath from there and got the Knifekits bandaid also lol. Thought it was odd but funny.
I ordered from them a few years ago and didn’t remember the bandaid. Threw me off a little but yes funny when I figured it out
Help me, should I get a powder coated or black oxide one? I am afraid of rust under the scales with the oxide, as it will be carried on my belt and in summer under the t-shirt I've always wanted an OD green one and my local shop has them in stock now, however they have also stocked on the oxide ones, damn that's a problem
No experience with the black oxide, but I do have a stripped Izula 2 that I took @anrkst6973 ’s tip of coating under the scales with silicone caulking and it’s been completely rust free since doing so. Did my Junglas shorty after.
I did the silicone thing, actually used black silicone gasket sealant, several years of being my daily user and it's like new under the scales. I have both coatings and quickly gravitated to the oxide for it's smoother cutting on the daily box opening tasks, rust has not been an issue and I don't do anything, no oil or wax, just run naked.
Thanks guys! I also like the smooth surface of the BO. Silicon under the scales is a very good idea, I might give it a try. I have a few days to think about it, I am taking an exam and promised myself a reward if I take it. So I should definitely take it
If you plan on using it on food, get the coated. But if you really like the OD green, again, get the coated lol. You can take some 1000 grit sandpaper, use it wet and you can smooth out some of the coating on it. It's pretty thick so it shouldn't really affect it too much
It will definitely see use on food. No sanding on my knives, they get smoothed out with rough use, wood, bones and other nasty stuff
Black Oxide along with other decades-old carbon steel: Stunk some at first, but simple food work smoothed out the patina and got it smelling fresh as a daisy within 2 months, and this 3 years-in, no oiling ever. Not dead yet using naked steel with food but cannot recommend it as it is likely you might die sometime and blame me. That said, Black Oxide is as smooooooth as it gets.
I've used plenty naked carbon steel with food, no problems with that. I thought about the BO like Leatherman's BO in the beginning, which is some chemical stuff for sure
