We did a competition at the last Gathering that won Indulf an ESEE. A friend did a video detailing the process:
Sweet ass video. I think Mors called for a 1" stick but that gets the job done and demonstrates it all very very well. Seriously the best way to get to know how your knife will do for you in odd tasks.
i've done a few more since the last gathering. they are a lot of fun. i have learned that there are multiple methods to get some of the cuts on the standard Mors style sticks, and the technique usually depends on the knife you are using. great way to learn a knife, kill time, and practice some skills.
Yes sir, they are a way to practice your knife skills. Usually people just use the same few for making tarp stakes, cooking tools, traps. So many of those are rarely used now. -RB
It's that damn square hole thingy. I should watch the video, I reckon...but I had a trapper knife, a pecan branch about the size of my thumb and about 14-16 inches long.. and, well....the next thing I knew I was whittling away ....
This was...not easy. The size and mass of the machete means slowing down, being extra careful, and practicing some gentle tap tap tap batonning.
Oh...I REALLY hate you..... Damned try sticks.....the only good thing about them is they get my blood pressure high enough it flushes the cholesterol through my arteries like a jet rodder truck.
So, for the most part I just do stop cuts and basic notches for tent stakes etc. this would be fun to do with my scout troop. Is there a good resource for the different notches and uses? I think it is in one of my books but that’s a lot of looking. Maybe you guys can help speed that up lol
