I love the HB Medium hawk as well, it’s just heavier. The Shrike goes with me when I’m on the road. Here’s a good comparison. The size of the GB seems perfect for my taste. C3B4C505-4015-4145-9D59-9FAB9BA68319.jpeg

Here’s a Norlund that I really like. This one was fairly rough when I got it. It cleaned up great. 2363456B-81EB-4255-AE43-09FF55E2EA83.jpeg

Just to be fair, these were all tested many times.

The American Steel won each time, until you get to the modern stuff.

My beautiful bride bought me a Gransfor draw knife for Christmas. I had to test it out. It is a superb tool as is most everything Gransfor makes. I used it to rough out a Bench for a shave horse. I had a cherry tree that the top broke out of so I decided to use it. I also broke out an old Plumb I salvaged that was in very rough shape before restoration 81C7988D-1E2E-40CD-9497-060726236D21.jpeg 8A4483BD-0586-4171-93BA-472074BE560F.jpeg BE95D39E-A0B4-4F7E-B6E6-812F8DD232D0.jpeg along with a Gransfor broad axe to hew the remaining wood into a beam. I ran out of daylight and only got one side done. The wood is very beautiful!

I’m building a shave horse with some of it. I’ll try to get some pics of those pieces. The beam will hopefully go in one of the many timber frames I plan on building. I’ve had a lifelong passion for axes. I enjoy using them as much as learning about the history. The original CrossFit program! Imagine all the logs hewn over the course of history. Our grandfathers didn’t have gym memberships!

A shave horse? Yes, perhaps photos will give me a better idea. Yep, working with an axe is definitely a workout.

And were strong AF! Here's a little hawk I have, the guy that made it said it is based on a medieval one that he saw in a museum here. I only added the rope for handle protection. I need to give it a good sharpening, as it is convex but I am not good with convex sharpening, so the India Stone would need to do it.

Other than that I am a Fiskars fan.
Not as pretty, but indestructable. IMO they are the best ones for using solely as tools. Of course they don't have the old world craftsmanship feel of a good GB and are not a conversation starter, but the large one is 17 years old and still going strong winter after winter.

I've had GB, Wetterlings and Hult Bruks before, they just don't work for hard woods, since they're designed for the pine forests of Scandinavia.

I really want to try a Hudson Bay and Boy's Axe US patterns but they are hard to find here in decent condition and importing one is too expensive for a tool that's made to be bashed through wood.

Fiskars work great, I just wish the handles were more shock absorbing like wood. I need to get some pourable soft plastic to fill the handle on my splitting axe.

I’m curious why you say they don’t work good on hardwood?

I don't like how their thin edges tend to stuck in hardwood. Not edge damage, as the steel is good, but doesn't throw big chips of wood like a fatty Fiskars.

The old Swedish military axes are real close to an American boys axe, if you can find one.

Interesting observation. GB Hatchets and axes are said to have a Rockwell hardness of 57.
I would think that would be plenty good for hardwood?

Nothing special here, the Dewalt is my favorite and most used but if I was to be stuck in the woods with nothing but a hatchet I'd like to have the Estwing...hard to beat a single piece of forged steel haha. The Council Tool axe I had to rehandle after the second swing ever made with it, something defective with the hickory they put on it at the factory I guess

I've been thinking of picking up a "Trucker's Friend" for my truck as well but haven't pulled the trigger [IMG]
