I decided to hike to the top of Horse Peak today and look for shed Elk horns.

It's a beautiful hike but extremely steep all the way to the top. Some photos starting out.

About the only thing blooming so far this year.

Some more photos on the way up.

Always seem to encounter bear tracks.

Finally made it to the summit. My phone started to shut down to protect the battery as the temperature dropped below 40 degrees.

I located one matching set of horns and two singles it could only get one photo of the set before my phone hibernated.

I had a great day in the woods. Got back to the cabin and soaked in a hot tub and took some ibuprofen!

Decided to make one last trip of the season into the Gila Wilderness.

I started out before sunrise in an attempt to beat the high temperature's.

Some mule deer getting water as I left the cabin.
    IMG_20210614_051958150_HDR.jpg

About 3 miles in I started finding wolf track's.
    IMG_20210612_142102940.jpg

    Then some elk kill's.
    IMG_20210612_091533162.jpg

I left the Forest Service trail system and started cross country. The temperature where already in the 80's at 0730.

I was just north of a 40,000 acre wildfire and the smoke was increasing.
    IMG_20210612_072532798_HDR.jpg

As I continued cross country I located a flint arrowhead.
    IMG_20210522_095818973.jpg

In about another mile I found an old aluminum arrow shaft stuck in the base of a pine tree.
    IMG_20210612_083205710.jpg

I cut the point out of the tree and it was still sharp enough to shave hair off my arm!
    IMG_20210612_084051400_HDR.jpg

After hiking several Miles I started back to the trail head.

As I came into a stand of Juniper trees I saw a bear standing on his rear leg's stripping juniper berries off the tree branches.
About one second after I saw him, he saw me and made the fastest retreat I have ever seen a bear make. I back tracked him and got a good photo of his track.
    IMG_20210614_062855895.jpg

A couple photos on the way back.
    IMG_20210612_091007990.jpg
    IMG_20210611_171835092.jpg

Getting back to the trailhead the temperature had reached 96 degrees at 9400 ft. Elevation. I drank just over a 140 ounces of water during the hike and additional 34 ounces at the vehicle.

Great day as always in the woods!

Took a hike today which turned into “ I will go just one more canyon” x4. I started out just before sunrise.

Some of the views as I headed north.

I normally stop at this point for day hiking but the temptation to go “just one more canyon “ won out. As I started into the canyon I located a spike elk shed.

I hiked into the next canyon and found an old elk shed that I left. It was turning to chalk and the rodents had chewed most of the point’s off.

I crossed into the next canyon and found an old bear den.

Checking around the den, I found an old bear skull.

Working my way down to the skull, it looked like it had been laying in the sun for a few years.

Decided to start heading back to the cabin. By gps I had gotten carried away and traveled 12 miles outbound so I knew it would be a long haul back. I tried to short cut through some of the terrain and get to a canyon I call Africa Rock . Here’s why we call it what we do.

Getting back to my favorite elk trail that leads back to the cabin.

Great day in the woods, by gps I did 21 miles. Made good time but knees and feet will need to rest tomorrow.

Very cool ! That terrain looks very similar to Lytton/Lilloet here in BC.
