Years ago, I was introduced to the world of wilderness skills and outdoorsmanship by a really great friend. I enjoyed this a lot, and as such I began to acquire gear and develop my skillset. But two things happened...
    1. I got married
    2. I got old
Both come together to mean, "I got fat and comfortable."

Now I find myself in a position of not only trying to develop my skills again, but also passing along as much information as possible to my young children. I do not want my kids to know as much as I do, but I want them to know more than I do. It is with this in mind that I glean all I can from this forum and rely on those same good old friends.

So this little adventure has begun and I'm really quite proud of my girls already. A great big thank you to @DYSPHORIC JOY and son.

    Quality instruction:

    Always produces results:

After one evening with @DYSPHORIC JOY and his son, my oldest was able to not only select the proper tinder for use with a ferro rod, but also compile and complete a fire without assistance from me.

While I am capable of performing this skill, it just goes to show that sometimes it is better for our kids to learn from others without the pressure and subsequent frustration. Not only that, this young man has a way to depart knowledge in a calm and effective manor that exceeds others his age.

Sometimes I have to learn to step back, get out of the way, and let knowledge happen.

How do you guys pass along your skills?

I worked for over 20 years as a firearms instructor at BSA camp and outdoor skills at troop level. That's an understatement about stepping back and letting knowledge happen, good for you !!! We had an agreement on the range that we wouldn't instruct our own kids because I think you have a tendency to "hover" and I think that kind of takes the fun out of learning a new skill for your own kids.

They did an outstanding job, especially with flint and steel.

With so many readily available distractions for kids, it is reassuring to know that folks still want to connect with nature.

One of our favorite fire steels.

This is some good stuff !!!!!!! My Godkids are adults now, they had both me and their father to corrupt their minds. They can all hold their own in the wild and will probably all mature into better grownups than either me or their fathers.

I took a look at Rural King and WALL-MARK last night. I couldn’t believe how the Buschcraft world has infiltrated.

My girls loved the Paiute demonstration until they realized I may try it on some of their cats.

The old man had to try something new this time!
    IMG_0101.JPG IMG_0105.JPG
I wasn't successful in creating my own ember and had to use one created by someone else, but still got to work on the basics of the skill of friction fire/bow drill.

I was very proud of my middle girl for not only being successful with a ferro rod, but just for breaking out of her shy shell to even try.

I see shelter work on our property being the next foray in our future. IMG_0103.JPG

Thanks again @DYSPHORIC JOY for the help and instruction!

To see your kids grow and develop in skills that actually have meaning to life makes me a happy man.

..... they make a fine meal as well..!!! :D

I don't have kids but treated my Godkids like my own, seeing how accomplishing tasks such as fire making, shooting, stalking, cat skinning and the like could bring out their self confidence and independence was always so great for me (they are all young adults now but those small steps set them on the right path. A day of learning practical skills such as these beats a lifetime of playing games on a screen !!!!

That's interesting, in cross section it looks like one of our eucalyptus.
