I finished. Cold Case search and rescue. Classified plane "recovery" search. Interesting stuff. This guy finds some pretty cool ways to spend some time outdoors. Thanks for posting.

In spite of the people dying, I liked how the writer expressed his respect for them as they appeared to make honest mistakes and didn't seem to be totally clueless in their choices of road or path to escape. It seemed to be more a matter of being unprepared and uninformed about what they were entering into rather than doing dumb things.

Similarly several Europeans have perished out here by being unprepared for both the roads (truly who thinks driving a Mini Van into a place called "Death Valley" is a good idea and weather (here- heat specifically). Dehydration has killed more people than all our bitey/ chewey critters combined. The path normally starts with a broken down or stuck vehicle....

Quit buying Land Rovers and a lot of lives would be saved down there.

Many do not realize how debilitating extreme heat can be. I was stationed in Blythe,CA for nine years. People die there all the time in summer months...however if you are a cigar guy, the skulls make a cool ashtray.

People who are used to humid heat are definitely at risk when they are introduced to dry heat.

....normally a tourist with a hired 4x4 that they get stuck up to the axles (needlessly often) and have no clue how to get it out....so figure they will walk "somewhere".

I have visited Death Valley on a couple of occasions. Both in winter . I cannot imagine the heat in summer.
The second time I visited was just after I married my wife in Vegas.
I wanted to go to the Brothel Museum in Pahrump. That choice was vetoed ;)

Makes for a good read. It's amazing how hard it is to find people in wilderness. There was a story of a missing woman in the town I live next to. She disappeared into thin air and it took about 3 months to find her body. She hadn't gone far but with so much ground to cover it's almost an impossible task. I guess it's easy to criticise the SAR teams after you know where they should have looked.

Tom Mahood is a really cool guy. I've had the pleasure of hiking with him a few times.

Change that to newer land rovers.
Up to 300tdi land rovers reliability is a none issue. Same with range rover classics/early discos.
The probems arose when LR tried to get too technologically clever and too many gremlins.
The one that made me laugh was early td5's that had poorly placed ecu's that was not sealed against the elements/wading
