I have a fixed blade knife that my wife’s grandfather brought with him from Germany. ....it’s from the late 1930’s..... the handle was wrapped in black electrical tape which I removed only to find a very cheap metal handle.... I would like to have someone make me a new handle... burl wood be ideal... since we spend lots of time in a canoe... a wooden handle that might keep the knife a float would be great... Who would you recommend?. It would be great to put this blade back in service again....
Posting a picture so we can get a better idea would help. Each style of knife has its own look, so handle material and style would be dependent on its physical features.
Sure, this not the exact knife, but I found a picture of it online... The knife I have is exactly the same... I’m thinking it would a good small game and fishing knife.... It is a Iroka .... Made in Germany... https://imgur.com/gallery/eJsuZ
I have not removed the current scales on the knife to expose the knife's tang. The knife's scales are riveted onto the knife. The scales are made of metal. I was planning on leaving the current set of scales on there, so as the builder that puts the new handles on it, can remove them.
Yes, totally open .... what did you have in your mind? BTW, I just got off work and based on your question above - I took to grinding the rivets off. The blade is a full tang... very flexible metal... so I'm now 100% confident that a new handle could be made.
For those of you who are following this... I decided.... and went with a new Micarta handle for my IROKA fixed blade Mike @esee6&3 (63 Blade Worx), did a fantastic job for me. I wanted I little bit more length to the handle. I have big hands. I plan to carry this on canoe outings for fishing/filleting/ and small game work... Mike did a great job, so happy with it... feels great in a full hand grip and works well with just a Thumb/index finger grip too.... I sent him a trace outline of my hand and a few pictures of what I wanted, and Mike nailed it thanks brother! some pictures: https://imgur.com/a/HOIPv
