The walking stick/hiking staff thread

That's exactly what I thought!

 

I love all the attachment ideas but one hasn't been brought up yet and I feel it's the most important......will there be a sword attachment?

 

I actually designed a version which had the gig spring loaded out the front. Can't sell that one, obviously.

ETA: Obviously I got a little carried away. Too many 80's action movies.

We’ve recently bought some awesome tracking poles if were really hiking. However if I’m woods bumming I prefer a staff, actually one I can carve on and one I made. It’s kind a like a diary stick of sorts. Plus it give me another reason to use my knives. Everyone needs to get started on one, and show them off.

 

ID is approximately .750".

 

Also, got it cleaned up and cord wrapped. And then fully assembled and with the crutch tip on there. Very pleased with the outcome. A few minor imperfections being a prototype and all (nothing remotely affecting function), but I believe I learned what I needed to learn for subsequent builds.

I will finish all the little accessories this week sometime and put some pics up.

I wanted to post a pic of the buttcap on the SAFE Staff. This is the same basic type of cap as the ones I make for my hollow handle knives. When people ask "Why does this or that cost so much?", I like to show them one of these or something comparable.

It's not just the materials, wear and tear on our machines and tooling, but the time and attention to detail over the course of many operations, often done by hand. In the case of this particular style of buttcap, with a steel plate attached for durability, and the other end threaded for a ferro rod insert and a divot milled in for use as a bow drill bearing block, there are close to 20 steps involved.

Fortunately for custom makers, there are plenty of people who underatand that and are happy to reward our hard work. But I thought I would share for those who aren't familiar with all the work involved in custom work. Thank you for your support!

HA!!!! the ex gf might have thrown out the 30 or so walking sticks I made a couple of years back, but she didn't get these two!

32" Solid fatwood cougar bopper/swagger stick and and a 48" ash shovel handle with steel point.

 

Don't use one very often, but when I do, it doubles as a gun rest. The trigger allows it to instantly adjust height for a pretty solid rest. Primos trigger monopod thingy, whatever they named it.

 

I have worked on a couple of sticks. The first is topped with an end to an antique horse hame. It took what seemed like forever to polish it up.


The second has a cord inlay and a couple of turk's head knots as decoration.

I made that one after seeing a man that has a baseball on his. A bopper was my intention.

 

I use one of the expanding aluminum ones, sometimes two, but I am looking for cromach for my casual day hikes and to take to the Scottish games.

 

is it solid or filled or hollow? (i'd probably pour some lead shot and epoxy inside...)
