Todays goal was charcloth/rope making. Once my fire was down to searing hot embers, I burned in a rectangular tobacco tin, to burn off the paint and rubber seal.

once the tin was burned in, I loaded it with 1/2" braided jute rope pieces. Took about 7 minutes to char it, but I put it on the coals for another 3 minutes as some of the jute was slightly brown still.

tested a piece of char-rope by sparking it with the @Sam Wilson / GEAR CONVOY BUSHsteel. The char rope glowed instantly and rapidly grew a large ember in the breeze, then actually caught on fire. It burned for about 3 minutes. Flint & steel fire making is fun, but I find using a ferro rod and charcloth a 1000% sure fire way of starting a tinder bundle.

Spent the rest of the Sunday Church Of The Woods Service by clearing more dead branches off the lower parts of the trees, planning a raised shelter build near the fire pit area, watching boats , paddle boarders, choppers, planes, and loads of ravens, gulls, eagles and crows fly by. Watched the two anglers down the shoreline catch a few large fish.

other than that , mellow day, some gear testing, good eating, skills training accomplished.

headed out and up back to the trail head

it was hot. I drained a canteen from the truck to the creek. A fifteen minute walk. Only cool spot was by the waterfall, but the midges and skeeters were loving the cool air there.

dropped down the bluffs to the rail tracks and crossed over. I was about 10' off the side of the rail tracks when the railway patrol pulled up. They told me they can ticket me heavily or arrest me for being by the tracks , because of the safety issue. Then they asked me where I was going- I told them right there , and pointed at the little shelter / fire pit area .

They let me off with a warning , saying to me that judging by my appearance and gear, I wasn't a safety concern , esp after I told them about the couple and dog walking ON the tracks further back. I told the rail patrol guys that next time I'd come down off the bluffs, and use the water culvert to get to the shoreline. We agreed on that and they left to ticket the dumbasses walking on the tracks further west

I carried on down to the fire pit , then dropped down to the shoreline.

Limpet? I know these shells were prized by the First Nations not only as a food source, but the shells were made into jewelry and used as little containers to hold homemade dyes and paints

found cordage. I pulled out individual strands to make fishing line (I had already found a rusted treble hook). But the line was so UV and salt water damaged that it literally started crumbling in my hands. But at least I tried to make fishing gear

Great day, aside from the encounter with the rail patrol. Had a visit from Hawk, Raven and Crow, and a gaggle of Canadian Terrorist Birds (Canada Geese, nasty buggers....and greasy too when roasted)

got to see an First Nations Elder paddling a canoe with a bunch of children. Pretty awesome to see traditional skills and adventure being passed down.

back at the parking lot, I was packing up my gear in the truck and a young Punjabi man with a small child asked me for help. Their door handle had broken and they couldn't secure the door . Together we figured out a way to secure the door from opening so the child would be safe , by using the back seat seatbelt thru the inner door handle and duct tape from my webbing rig to cover the latch so it couldn't be pulled open. We shook hands and went our own ways up and down the highway.

So it's been about three weeks since I've had Church Of The Woods time . Same with Bro @Twoody88

so I picked him up and we headed out in my custom firewatch volunteer truck , all the way to Hope BC for a breakfast burger (spicy chicken) and fuel. Headed up the Fraser Canyon, noting dozens of businesses, gas stations, hotels, campgrounds etc that had been abandoned / shut down / left to decay due to the "lockdowns" we had up here for two plus years. Pretty sad to see.

Carried on to the Old Alexandra Bridge past Yale BC. There is an old trail on the other side , part of the old Cariboo Wagon Road that connected the interior of BC to the Coast during the Gold Rush era

sadly, the the bridge was closed (restoration in progress) and there was security trailers and endless fencing preventing access.

undeterred, we carried on further up the Fraser River, swollen dangerously high (15' higher than normal) and moving dangerously fast. We stuck to the steep embankments between the river and the rail lines.

I was hoping to find an old trail , but there was none on this side. So we bushwhacked for a bit on the steep terrain.

we scrambled about on the steep embankment, looking for old blue/green glass insulators from the gold rush era power / telegraph poles that lay in the forest along the rail line. Didn't find anything.

Scrambled onwards and up, up another bluff and paused for a water / snack break

    Part 2

Chilled out at the bluff overlooking the rail tracks and had water / snacks . @Twoody88 was checking out his new @Sam Wilson / GEAR-CONVOY BUSHSteel FerroRod .

We rucked fast along the highway back to the truck and headed further up the Fraser Canyon, past Boston Bar , a little cemetery from the mid 1800's , still in use today.

Drove further and further and got to Lytton BC. The main town and surrounding rolling foothills got torched in a massive wildfire over a year ago. It still has not been rebuilt, despite "promises" and funding by the government to so. To add insult to injury, another 1700 hectare wildfire is blazing away right now on the other side of the town / river. Evacuations were in progress, as well as 8 fire fighter choppers with water buckets and 500 plus ground attack fire crews from the BC Forest Service.

@Twoody88 and I drove further on and up into part of the old burn from last year. Parked the truck, donned the webbing rigs and hiked up the scorched rolling open range foothills

You NEED to drive the Fraser Canyon to really understand and realize how MASSIVE these mountains / canyons / rivers are.....it's mind blowing

@Twoody88 The Twitter W:confused::eek:re alerted me to movement amongst the burnt trees further up the ridge. We found fresh deer tracks, and a big cat paw prints following. Didn't see either the deer or the cougar but the tracks were literally a few minutes old. Big rolling open foothills and we didn't see the cougar :eek:

Wandered around the burnt yet recovering hills. Lytton is very dry and hot. Temps in the 40's - 50 Degree Celsius are very common. I was drinking a lot of water . @Twoody88 on the other hand is some sort of super desert dweller and rarely drinks water. I think he stores water in his moobs like a camel :D:D:D:D:D

One of the major hazards of wandering in an old forest fire burn , is the Punji Sticks. Yes, literally razor sharp, multi pronged Punji Sticks are everywhere in the burn - see pics below . Accidentally trip while hiking and fall on one of these, your bleeding out rapidly

I plan to cut a large number of these, scrape the burn off and make war clubs with them :)

We descended back down to the truck and headed home , a long drive of about 3 hours. Short and sweet quick Dayhike / Explore. We plan to come back up very soon and get even further into the Lytton backcountry and do an overnighter camping trip. It will be an epic adventure.
    Stay tuned
