What do you guys recommend? I've been looking at the PENN Battle II Spinning just because I'm old school and my Dad and I had PENN reels when I was a kid. However I'm thinking there's probably better options out there especially at this price point.

Not sure what size range your looking for but pflueger president is a great reel for the price. I’ve had mine for a few year and no problems at all.

Thanks... size would be on the smaller end. For the Battle II, probably the 2000 which will fit 180yds of 10lb braid.

That Penn is a nice looking reel for the money, I like Pfluegers and Abu Garcias too usually at a lower price range.

If you can find a NOS penn 430ss or 4300ss that's just about the best fresh water fishing reel out there

Those are nice Exdat, but I don't think that is what we are looking for.

Abu make great reels. I've used them for 20 years without any problems at all.

They know their sh!t over there in Sweden. 6500 and 7000 series is what I've been using for salt water for the same amount of time

Agreed. They don't have a huge amount of features but they keep on running forever. I brought a Abu spinning reel for my wife to use, cost about £100 here, and I'm impressed with it. The drag is super smooth and could stop a train. Unfortunately she likes it too much for me to steal it from her!

Anything Shimano or Daiwa will work.

I just ordered a Daiwa Steez 17 from Japan :)

My father-in-law recently gave me a Mitchell 406, manufactured in the early 1950's. He has quite a collection of Mitchells and others too. Planning to get a rod to go with it for some surf fishing in Emerald Isle in a few weeks time. :)

I really like the Pflueger President. It seems that the lower priced spinning reels from most of the major players are cheaply made by the chinese. The pflueger is real smooth with plenty of ball bearings. It's good for fresh water. It's not sealed for salt water.

My favorite reel is Okuma Avenger, I like the baitfeeder on it. I'm cheap, so that's probably the most expensive reel I have.
