While this is a project that I am doing myself I will not be posting instructions like a true DIY thread because all that I'm doing is such common skills y'all have. So I got a set of scales from @Southern Gent on the Pay it Forward thread (which I do need to put something up in return). Pine cone scales w/venom green and black liners. I got a 3 from Dale without the sheath. I wanted to do something a little more than just swapping the scales out so I decided to make a smaller EDC version of the 3. I know mods of the 3 have been done like this before and that is the inspiration. My next steps will be etching the logos, stripping the coating and polishing to a more dull like finish. I was thinking about a mirror finish but I'm not liking that vision. The scales will be fitted by using the holes that are aligned in the next pic. That chip in the scales is not a issue since the knife profile doesn't go out that far. The next steps will be getting done over the next couple of weeks and y'all will be kept in the know.
Feels awesome. Fills the hand a little more than the Izula but with a longer, wider and thinner blade.
Looking good James! I really like the new profile. Once you etch and blue (optional) the blade you can fairly easily put a satin finish that looks great. Here is a video I found with a real simple tutorial. Can't wait to see this one finished.
I never thought of shaping the handle like that. Looks good. I would want to try it in hand before cutting down a knife like that. I might not be able to turn it in for warranty replacement.
Nothing yet. I've been working too much to enjoy side projects. I keep forgetting to swing by Radio Shack for some etching liquid.
This is an interesting idea. The pics looked a little off and I couldn't put my finger on it until I read everything. My 3 is also under construction as we speak. Work and other things have me busy too so I squeeze in time to fiddle with it when I can. I've got practically a whole bottle of that PCB etchant in the pic. You could have it if you lived nearby. Best of luck with yours. I look forward to seeing how it turns out.
Up from the dead.... Any updates? Specifically on the usability of the shortened 3? I also have a choil-less 3 but I'm unsure of whether or not I want to do any further mods to it.
