When you walk around with that, you need to be wearing executioner robes...

So today I finally decided to stop being lazy and work on my Velvicut that's been sitting and decaying for 2 years or so. I took 220 grit sandpaper and got rid of all the surface rust on both sides, gave the whole handle a light sanding, and everything got a nice heavy coat of BLO. It looks brand new but it will be getting another coat tomorrow morning once this one is really set and dry. I made sure to get plenty around the eye and wedge and especially on the end grain of the handle. I need to sharpen it in a bad way.

@FortyTwoBlades I need one of those pucks. Is there still time to order one and have it before Christmas?

As a note, I'm not seeing anything on my end for anything going to a NJ address. So I don't think your order was fully submitted.

Thanks much brother I appreciate it. Giving the Velvicut a little rehab really reingnited my love for axes. I'm so glad I started messing with it today.

I thought about it as I was putting the oil on it. I didn't take a "before" picture but I'll sure as hell take an "after" picture.

Got this from my dad today. When asked where he got it, he said "dug it out from cleaning someplace".

    Now to clean it up.

With this new handle it holds dead horizontal when held with open palms along the main length. And it's holding up just fine in chopping. Good vertical continuous grain end to end, and great elasticity to the wood so I feel confident levering on the handle when need be. The blanks I received were 36" instead of the 38" I was told they'd be, and there was some end cross-grain checking so I was taking a bit of a chance doing a full 36" with it. When driving the handle into the eye one of the checks wanted to start opening up a little so to help keep it from worsening down the road I drove a corrugated fastener across it to hold the end together.

I have ZERO concern that it'll break in the neck area. It's a very sturdy handle and the responsiveness in chopping tells me it's actually not going to experience much strain in the actual chopping itself. :)
