So I purchased the work sharp precision knife sharpener. And volunteered my esee 3 first. Instead of the 20 degree grind I decided to put a 15 degree edge on it. Lemme just say that this thing will carve wood now like nobody's business!!! An absolute powerhouse at shaving wood. I'm extremely happy with its performance now. My only complaint is the 320 grit diamond stone on the sharpener did take a long time to reshape it from 20 to 15. Other than that, it's well worth the $50 for the work sharp sharpening system.
That's a nice edge! After you use it a bit, please share how it holds up and if 15 degrees per side is too low for the blade profile and steel. My first 3 was resharpened to 17 degrees per side and was an awesome slicer.
Most definitely will. It reminds me alot of my mora 511. Seems to slice close to the way that one does. Will wait and see how the edge holds. So far so good though.
A guy on YouTube also did his to 17° and was complaining the edge rolled way to easy, so yes please keep us updated. I've been wanting to go 17 myself but with the issues he had I figured 20 was good enough.
I needed thicker liners for my 3" but didn't have any G10 arround so I made them from plexiglas and polished them really good so they are see-thru. Actually looks really cool and fits my hand great. Also made a Kydex sheath for it, simple but does the job. I usually scout carry it but made an adapter just for fun.
I did a little sharpening project after work today with my WE130 and the ESEE 3. I am obviously not a photographer - LOL. It is hard to take a picture of both the main bevel and the sharpened swedge at the same time. It's also interesting how the camera picks up the scratch pattern. It looks like a fine satin finish in real life, even with optical magnification. 1000 grit WE diamond stones. As I recall this example was delivered with a not really sharpened secondary edge. At one point a took a file and/or a coarse diamond to it to get it into a rough bevel and kind of left it at that. Today I re-profiled the swedge to 25 degrees per side and the main bevel to 15 degrees per side. The tip is very very pointy now. It would poke holes in things con gusto! I love 1095, but man it rusts so fast here with all the rain we've been getting. And I don't have air conditioning. I do have a utility room I keep a dehumidifier in for metal things. Constantly wiping down sharpened edges isn't my forte.
Did you strop it? Stropping takes a lot of those scratches out, not all but most. As for the trust, clean it up and keep a thin coat of mineral oil on the logos and edge.
I do have a strop, but I seem to make the knife less sharp with it too easily. Obviously operator error there. I do like the shine from stropping though. I'd like to try the finer stones and lapping films for the machine I have eventually.
