I was surprised that they didn't have the tobacco isle open.

We have two Walmarts here and both are doing renovations. The small Walmart went to all self checkout except one regular lane that is never open. There is no more cigarette lane in either of them also. The cigarettes are in a clear case on the other side of the self checkouts and you have to ask a "cashier" to get them for you. The Supercenter went to all self checkouts except 3 or 4 regular lanes that, again, are never open. I talked with one cashier not too long ago and she was saying that no cashier lost their job (which I find very hard to believe) and the reasoning for all the self checkouts was so walmart could get more people through faster, meaning so they could bank more money. I also do the online ordering and pick up but if I only need one or two things then I'll checkout in electronics, sporting goods or lawn and garden.

I guess im the odd man out here but i like the self checkout. Its faster and i can organize things how i want them organized. I do hate the ones that make you have a cashier do things for you like when you buy booze. That delays me and i hate that.

I don't like them but I use them. I wish auto parts store would go self checkout. That would fix a lot of my issues....

We have one WalMart in our county, it's not even a super WalMart. They always have at least one lane open. The one I went to the other day is in the next county near my work. It's a fairly large city for GA, but it's a pretty crappy place. I guess you can say that about most larger cities in GA. I do most of my shopping in person because a lot of the time I am looking for something to do something that it's not made for, when I can't find what I really need locally.

    Same here.
It's not complicated. Pick out what you want or need. Scan those things. Put them in bags. Go about your business.
    Or... shop somewhere else.

Newsflash: it's 2021 and Walmart sucks. There are almost always other options. If there aren't then deal with it like an adult.

And if you spend an hour filling a buggy and then leave it just because you can't be bothered to scan your own stuff you're a d-bag.

    No Whiners RIP.

Online shopping at WalMart and Sams Club keeps us on budget.
    Lessens the impulse buys.

Plus, we just go pick it up so it saves a ton of time. No more fighting the crowds on weekends.

When I do (rarely) go inside Sams I scan everything on my phone as I pick it up. Then pay on the app and leave, no waiting in line at all.
Online ordering is still better however.

I’ve done online ordering at Advanced Auto.

Was during the height of Covid, ordered some brake pads.

I order from Rock Auto but sometimes I have to do some parts comparison because I'm trying to put parts from vehicle B on vehicle A. In those times I rather have control of the computer so I can move fast. Most of these folks just want a pay check, they don't care about being a good parts person.

If Walmart went full self checkout Nationwide, it would mean what? Maybe 30 lost jobs?

While in high school I worked for a chain grocery store for a while. The store manager hated thieves and we were given free reign to stop them. Looking back I dont know how no one got seriously hurt or killed. We were all young and stupid and thought we were invincible. And were getting paid to, quite often, chase people across town and fight.

I remember a few years later talking to a former coworker who was still employed there and he was told me that they weren't allowed to confront thieves anymore or even call LEOs. They were required to first call the home office, present their evidence and then ask for permission to report the crime. I was shocked (still young and stupid).

Now, I fully understand the decisions. If I had any kind of financial stake in a business there's no way that I would allow an employee to confront or restrain someone stealing stuff. Let that **** go and write it off every year. Or pay an off duty LEO to hang around.

The Home Depot, Walmart and others learned this lesson the expensive way. They paid out a lot of multi-million dollar settlements to employees, thieves and in some cases innocent bystanders for injures, either real or not. A LOT.

Don't take any of the comments in my last couple of posts as defending Walmart. I dont like the company for many reasons, most of them much more important than how many registers they keep open.
So I just don't shop there. I don't go to the stores, I don't buy from them online.
Problem solved. There are almost always better options.

In college I worked loss prevention for a few different JC Penney’s stores and a Sears. In the beginning we were told to we could go as far as we felt it was safe to apprehend and or recover the stolen merchandise, slowly it shrunk to the parking lots then the curb outside the store. In my experience it wasn’t so much that LP employees were getting hurt as much as thieves were purposely ditching the merchandise as they’d leave the store and LP folks wouldn’t see and the thieves would sue for falsely being detained and the stores were losing big money. As these changes were made our focus shifted to internal theft by employees, which was a larger source of loss than actual shoplifting at the time.

I completely agree and I’m the same as you, haven’t been inside a Walmart in years. As much as we can we try to support more locally owned store chains.

One thing that has to be understood about Walmart's, and I'm sure other companies', LP; is that they're no longer considered 'Loss Prevention'. They are now labelled 'Asset Protection', and their scope goes FAR beyond the detection and prevention of external theft.

The role of Asset Protection in those buildings is quite extensive. They deal with external theft, sure. Additionally they are highly concerned with internal theft, legal and environmental compliance, vendor interactions, teaching and training the ENTIRE staff(250-500 individuals per building), and on and on... I could write a book on the subject.

To the points made above, there have been multiple oopses which led to the current state of shoplifting interactions.

I just see it as resisting machines replacing people. I wasn't happy, I wanted the stuff in the cart. I only went to that store because they had what I needed and my local store didn't. Unfortunately walmart is the only place around to get certain things in my area.

Yep. What will happen is a new store will pop up touting real people to check you out and the cycle continues...

Ive recently seen full service gas stations which used to be gone for good i thought.

A local grocery chain that started in my hometown called Rouses refuses to put self checkout machines in their stores. I think they’ve actually opened some stores in Alabama.
