So, I've decided to just dive in. I'm going to register for next month's Texas Precision rifle competition.

    What do I need?

    Here's what I have:
    Rifle
    Mags
    Ammo
500yd Range finder (yeah, I know)
    Rear bag

What would you guys suggest that I try to borrow or buy before the match? Funds are pretty limited so buying a Kestrel or some $100 Wiebad bag are out of the question lol. I've never had the chance to chrono my rifle, so I don't have any realistic ballistics calculations or DOPE with this optic.

My buddy is going to go with me just for ****s and giggles and he's going to use the range's loaner rifle, which is.......*Drum roll*.......an AI AX in 6.5CM with a Leupold Mk5 haha. So their loaner rifle is a $10k setup. Gotta say I'm a little jealous.

A sock filled with doll filler pellets or beans will be your rear bag. Make two.

I don't have a dedicated sling, but I could steal a Vickers from one of my AR's. I do have a rear bag, but I assume this won't be sufficient for some of the barrier/odd position stages. Their website suggests a "pump pillow" lol. I have the Strelok ballistics app, but without any real chrono data all I have to go on is the FPS information for my factory ammo, which obviously isn't exact for my rifle.

Yeah I may be getting in over my head. So I brought in the big guns for advice haha.

This is something I've been wanting to do for a long time. I figured if I keep putting it off and waiting until I have everything I "think" I'll need, then I'll never actually get to it. I decided to just dive in and have fun regardless of the outcome.

Thats a good outlook. Id add that a good tool kit is nice to have when things go sideways on the range.

I do have a general toolkit that I've pieced together specific for this rifle. All of the allen wrenches that I've used putting it together, a boresnake and the factory trigger in case I need that.

    Boresnake
Borja PTL, Allen driver and ratchet for action screws
    Punches for the trigger pins
    Factory trigger
    Spare optic battery
Titanium spacer that I made to reset the gap on my check riser consistently
    Torx wrench for my rings
Allen wrench for my turrets and trigger adjustment

So this is a big thing. Let’s start with this
    For the event:
What are the ranges you will engage out too
    How many rounds are needed?

Can you procure enough ammo preferably from the same lot to cover you for the competition and say 50-100 rounds for getting good dope for your rifle?

They don't say exactly, but they say to expect ranges out to 1200yds
The match info says maximum 100rds to zero, complete all stages and have some left over for mulligans. 8 stages in all

    Here's the match info - http://txprecisionmatches.com/event/jun-2019-precision-rifle/

OK my first question was max range (now answered), without some dope on the round you are running it is a bit of an ask. What is your current zero ? What is the, longest range you can fudge up to shoot at before the comp ? Shooting at 300- 500 or so will at least give you an idea how your rounds are performing and from that you may be able to extrapolate some extra data to work with out to 1000 plus. A neighbour, friend, gunshop or accommodating hooker with a chrono you could put a half dozen rounds across would be even better.

I think @ny700 are going pretty much down the same path. You just need that starting point.

Current zero is at 100yds, but I zero'd the rifle about 1,700 miles from where I'm currently at, so chances are some changes will need to be made. I've shot my rifle out to 550yds before, but with a different optic on it. Once I switched over to this optic, we packed up and moved across the country and I haven't really been able to shoot it since.

The only day that I MIGHT be able to do anything with it, is the day before the match at the range that the match is at. But that's a pretty large logistical hurdle that I'm trying to figure out right now.
