@Allen Morrison There's your sheath on the right hand side of my pack. Told you there would be mud and funky water. ;)

It's an Old Town "Next". Around 55 lbs. About 13.5 ft long, nearly 3ft across the beam. It advertised as a kayak/canoe hybrid.

So, as evidenced by the above pics, my fur child is still young and impetuous. He loves water, loves to swim, and sometime gets out of the boat. :). The issue is picking 70lbs of wet squirming pup up to get him back in..without going for a swim yourself. I needed something....

A trip to the hardware store for some fittings and schedule 40 grade pvc. A second stop at a big box for some dock bumpers. And a few hours sawing, glueing, and screwing it all together. The bottom of the bumper/float is about 3" above the bottom of the keel. With me, dog, and whatever gear I have it should be on or very near the surface of the water.
The pontoon sits out app 1 ft on each side so increasing the width to 4ft.
I also have plenty of pipe left so I can easy increase the width if need be. I haven't gotten it painted or anything but I'm excited to try it out.

Nice outriggers @anrkst6973 , thought about this myself for my kayak.
They'll also allow you to stand up for fishing/spotting.
How did you secure them to your boat?

The outriggers increase the width of the boat by a measured foot on each side, when the boat tilts the float gets to the water first. It would be near impossible for even a big ole bear like you to push that float under and make it stay. (Try pushing a basketball underwater and holding it below the surface. ;) ) The gunwale can't ever tip far enough to take on water.

I had a custom aluminum crossmember made to support the seat. I just tie to that on the bottom edge and on the stern thwart at the top. I had a coil of 1/4" nylon floating rope hanging in the shop so I used that.

With those screweyes looks like you could also attach some nylon webbing straps to go under the keel for further securement.

Or you can use paracord and string your caught fish off of it.

Yes, but stringging fish in gator country isn't a good idea.

Not recommended in a canoe or kayak,
    Remember JAWS
