Great story, really got my heart racing just reading about it!!

Most likely predator we’re likely to come across here in Aus is a pack of wild dogs which doesn’t worry me greatly, Mountain lions or bears would be a whole new level of predators to watch out for.

Mind you we’ve got the most deadly selection of venomous snakes in the world, so swings and roundabouts I guess...

Yes, a very good point, I’ve hunted a few of the State Forests around but I’ve never been able to bring myself to hunt the Belanglo forest (the site of the backpacker killings for those not aware), you’re right, the 2 legged predators are the ones to be concerned about over here.

Don't do that!!! Get it bored out to either a .35-30 or a .38-55, same case head and same OAL for the most part, all that is required is a rebore...

I think you might need a bit more than a simple chamber re-bore to go from 30 caliber to either 35 or 38? Just for starters, the larger bore ammo probably won't even fit in the magazine tube. Then if you do bore it out, you will then have a smooth bore? There went any accuracy it ever had. I personally would leave it alone and shoot it as is. Look for a larger bore that was originally made that way if you want a larger bore.

Both cartridges use the .30-30 case as a parent. My buddy has a .35-30 and proclaims it to be the greatest levergun round.

My Henry Big Boy Carbine in .357. It's not old or anything since I just became legal to own firearms last year, but I love it no less.

I wasn't aware of that, but still, aren't the bullet sizes .35 & .38 respectively? How are you going to get them through a .30 cal barrel?

I'm no gun guru, but I think that's what he meant by "re-bore". Make the bore bigger and rifle it. So instead of working with a blank, they just bore out and rifle an existing barrel, saving time on outside finish and chamber....I think.

No bugger that guys, I actually WANT a .44mag and this 94 owes me nothing. I have found a barrel in the US and the other internal parts for 44M (shell stop and lifter and a couple of others I can't recall) so it is in essence a non-permanent change (though not at all a "quick change" back either). You can re-bore a barrel but it is a pain in the arse and I don't actually know a gunsmith here in Australia...errr...I mean Austria... doing it at present.

It’s a simple rebore or rebarrel job. The gunsmith that did my friends guns charged about $300 a gun.

Wrong on both counts - there are several companies that will re-bore and cut rifling at the larger bore. The diameter of the mag tube for .38-55 is identical to .30-30. I have an old 26" octagon barrel 1894 rifle out for re-boring to .35-30 cal right now but probably won't get it back for the better part of a year. It's a family gun and was unshootable when we got it from the family farm...

You are indeed correct. It is not an uncommon procedure...

Then that makes perfectly good sense - the parts that you can't remember are probably the shell guides, I think .44 Mag is different from .30 WCF due to overall length and when the cartridge gets released to the chamber...

Then it's a good thing I used the words "might" and "probably."

All of my life I never saw anything interesting about a lever action, particularly those in pistol caliber. I wanted and purchase powerful bolt actions through the years. Many hunters from the rural area I grew up in extolled their virtues. Even as a teenager I thought them fools. Even the anemic .308 was far more effective than the lowly 30-30. overexposure to the AR platform has deleted my interest in semi autos.

At 59 years of age a friend traded me a Marlin 94 in .357. I am now enamored with it and want one in .45 Colt. ( and dream about one in .475 Linebaugh) I thoroughly enjoyed shooting it on a recent outing. It along with my 1950 S&W make a great pair.

Does anyone in here outfit them with peep sights?
