Alright gang, here's my submission: This is a succulent commonly found in marshes on both sides of the Atlantic. So even our fellow members from the UK may be able to name it if they spend time near the shore ( @nathan shepherd ). This is a wild edible with many common names. Any of the common names or the genus are correct in my book. Good luck!
Yes! You're up since you got it first. But @nathan shepherd & @The Marsh Gorilla also had correct responses. Sorry @alien animal I don't know it by that name.
Wasn't quite prepared but here it goes .. Part of the sunflower family , grows near pastures in the south east .
You got it , this plant gave cows that ate it the "trembles" and poisoned the milk . People have died after drinking the poisoned milk . It was called the "Milk sickness" back in the day . Now you're up !
LOL I don't know that it's made me smarter. And I doubt you need it for that, you're sure able to pull out some damned obscure plants for this!!! It's leaves have capsaicin on them, depending on the species it can be as hot on the tongue as wasabi mixed with Tabasco peppers. I think the common name smartweed comes from the old way folks said something that hurts "smarts", but I'm not positive about that. Part of my job is wetland plant identification and density determination, so I've been able to learn a lot of odd plants. And over the last 8 years I've gotten into deer management with a friend on his parent's land so I'm always trying to learn what they're eating and what new beneficial vegetation we should add. Being a nature nerd has dictated a lot of my life and free time. Oh and here's my follow up. The spaghetti looking strands are the plant not what it's growing on.
