Frequently Asked Questions

  • Where can I buy ESEE Knives?

We do not sell our knives direct to the public since we don't compete with our dealer market. Please visit our dealer page to learn where you can buy.

  • What is the sharpening angle on ESEE knives?

The edges on all of our knives are applied by hand. We do our best to maintain a 20 degree (per side) edge angle but due to the hand application, they may vary slightly. We suggest using a Spyderco Sharpmaker for general edge maintenance or a flat diamond hone.

  • Can I order handles slabs for ESEE knives?

Yes, they are available here on our web site.

  • Will my ESEE Knife rust and how do I prevent it?

Our carbon steel knives are made from high carbon 1095 steel, and while 1095 is a top choice for professional cutlery designed for hard use, it will rust and stain if not properly cared for - especially on the cutting edge and around the laser engraving. It is the user's responsibility to keep the blades properly lubricated and cleaned. We suggest using a dry film rust inhibitor such as TUF-GLIDE or TUF-CLOTH.

  • I can't figure the sheathing options out for my ESEE knife.

Please refer to the sheath instruction sheets found on our web site. Each knife listed has an instruction sheet at the bottom of the web page.

  • What's the difference between ESEE, RAT Cutlery, and Ontario?

Randall's Adventure & Training manufactures and fully guarantees ESEE Knives and all knives previously marketed under the RAT Cutlery brand name (RC-3, RC-4, RC-5, RC-6). While Randall's Adventure & Training was the first company to ever use RAT as its brand name in fixed blade knives, we decided to change our knife company name to ESEE Knives in February 2010 due to confusion in the marketplace with other companies marketing under the RAT name). This was simply a name change. Nothing else has changed in the design, manufacture or quality of our knives. Randall's Adventure & Training does not manufacture or offer a warranty on any knife made by Ontario Knife Company under the Ontario RAT branding (RAT-3, RAT-5, RAT-7. RTAK, TAK, Model 1 Folder and Model II Folder). The Ontario RAT knives were designed by Randall's Adventure & Training but are manufactured by Ontario Knife Company. Find more information about all of our designs on our History page.

  • Is your unconditional knife warranty for real?

Yes, please see details on our warranty page.

  • Where does the name ESEE come from?

ESEE is pronounced "S E" and is an acronym for Escuela de Supervivencia (School of Survival), Escape and Evasion (ESEE). This acronym comes from our long running jungle survival school that teaches these principles of staying alive in remote and hostile environments.

  • Where are ESEE knives and gear made?

With the exception of the Lite Machete blade and the ESEE/Becker Cooking Knives, all ESEE branded knives are manufactured in Idaho Falls, Idaho by Rowen Manufacturing. Our Cordura MOLLE backs are sewn in Mexico. Izula gear sewn goods are made in Knoxville, TN.
